01/23/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/23/17 19:45 Petrie was brought into ACC in a carrier. He was standing near the front and when counselor put her face to close the carrier, Petrie started to wag his tail. Counselor put carrier on the ground and opened the door for Petrie to walk out. He moved very slowly out of the carrier, taking a good sniff with every step. Counselor offered Petrie a treat but he sniffed and politely declined. His tail stopped wagging but would start back up again every time counselor placed her hand out for him to sniff. She pet him on his head and once he allowed she pet his back and eventually his tummy to see how he would do if she went to pick him up. He was fine so counselor picked up Petrie who went stiff in arms and placed him onto the counter. He stood still for collaring but moved his head away once counselor was done. He kept sniffing the counter so it was hard for counselor to get a good picture with his head up. He allowed counselor to pick him back up and place him on the ground.

01/25/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY:None 1/23/17 Unaltered, Male,Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/25/17 Look:5. Dog yelps and snaps. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Petrie was very fearful in the assessment room and with handling, keeping his distance from the handler. During look he backed away, increasing distance as much as possible, and yelped and air snapped when the assessor touched his collar. The rest of the handling items were omitted. PLAYGROUP: 1/25: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Petrie is nervous and avoidant of approach. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/23/17 During his initial medical exam Petrie was tense and growling ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Inchworm so we cannot be certain of his/her behavior in a home environment. In the shelter Inchworm is fearful and shut down so his energy level is not accurately seen. Once in a stable home environment, Ichworm’s energy level should be re evaluated. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Petrie has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Petrie has shown fearful behavior through growling and snapping while at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Petrie the option to walk away from any social interaction. Petrie should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Petrie’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Petrie would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.)
