03/11/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/11/17 12:31 Petey is a 6 year old male neutered brown and white american pitbull terrier who is being surrendered because the family wants him to have a better home. Petey has been with the family 3 years. Petey lived with 7 adults and 3 cats. Petey is kept separated from the cats because he is reactive to them with growling. He is receptive to the other family members with a loose body and seeks interaction. When visitors come to the home he will bark to alert the family and then sniff to investigate and then will withdraw. When Petey is in the yard where he spends alot of time he will guard the area with bark and growling and the owner does not let people interact with him at this time. When on walks he can be insistent on leash and when he encounters other animals he will pull and growl. Owner says he is receptive to people on the street with a soft body but can become fearful towards long flowing jackets. Petey is fearful of a bath and will attempt to flee. He can be defensive for handling at the vet with growling during a bear hug. If on the bed or couch he is easily removed. While eating Petey will growl if approached and family does not remove the food bowl while he is eating. Petey will only release toys for his owner but will guard them with growling from others. Petey likes to play fetch with chew toys. He knows the cue sit and stay. When the family is home he likes to be where they are. When home alone he should not be left with plastic objects as he may ingest them. Petey eats dry food. Upon intake Petey was not handled. Counselor was able to scan for microchip (positive) but did not collar or photograph.

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile 3/10/17 Neutered, Owner surrender (3 years in the previous home) Previously lived with: Seven adults and three cats Behavior toward strangers: He will bark then becomes calm after investigating them. Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: He is reactive towards them and separated in the home Resource guarding: Yes, he will growl when his food bowl is removed while eating. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Unknown Energy level/descriptors: Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/15/17 Look:1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag:1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Petey was friendly and social towards the assessor, he displayed no concern. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: According to Petey’s previous owner, when he sees other dogs he begins to growl. When off leash at the Care Center, Petey immediately fixates on the novel female, and begins to muzzle punch the gate while hard barking and growling. He was not let in the pen, due to the greeter’s lack of confidence. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/11/17 During his medical examination, Petey was friendly and easy to handle. ENERGY LEVEL: Petey has displayed a medium level of energy in the care centers, though we recommend he receive daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet to direct this energy. IN-SHELTER BEHAVIOR: Since Petey’s stay at the Care Center, it has been reported he is reactive towards dogs in and out of his kennel (barking, lunging). He displayed this behavior in Play Group; lunging and muzzle punching the gate, and did not stop until the other dog was out of sight. Due to this display of behavior and for the safety of staff and other dogs in the care center, Petey is not a candidate for the adoptions room. Placement should be sought out as soon as possible.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5) _X_Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the reactivity seen towards other dogs while here at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Petey not be placed in a home with other dogs at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Petey associate other dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Due to potential food guarding behavior. Petey gave an appropriate warning of his discomfort (growl) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Petey can be left alone while eating so he does not need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org.
