09/11/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I first saw Petey huddled in the back of his cage I was sure there was a lot of treat throwing and baby talking in my future. So I was delighted when he came right out with me and even more delighted when it became apparent outside that he was mostly afraid of the strange new situation he finds himself in, not so much of me. He’s definitely shy and nervous, but stays close and seems very sweet. He seems housebroken, will “sit’ for treats and is easy to handle. When I take him in the yard he immediately joins me on the bench, makes fleeting soft eye contact, doesn’t move away when I pet him on his chest and behind his ears, and even offers a few flicker-y tail wags. He really lights up at the sight of a squeaky ball and even his nerves can’t get in the way of bounding after it, laying down and admiring it between his paws, and gently chewing on it like a pacifier. So nice to see Petey relatively carefree and joyful and I can only hope he finds a lifetime of that…he deserves it!
09/10/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Petey came into the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Behavior during intake: Petey was tolerant of all handling by the counselor. During SAFER Petey was nervous when entering the assessment room he had a tense and low body posture when interacting with the assessor, he allowed minimal handling during the look item and was tense with his ears back and lip licking. During the sensitivity item Petey avoided eye contact and became stiff. Not all tactile items were able to be conducted as Petey became stiff on the sensitivity item. He displayed no interest in any of the resource items during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue that can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Toy 1: No interest. Playgroup:When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Petey is nervous as he enters the pen with a tense face and a low body. He initially ignores the greeter dog as he explores the pen but does eventually greet her. When she turns around and attempts to greet him, Petey becomes sensitive, lip curling and air snapping at her.
