11/12/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
11/12/16 17:50 Basic information: Perky is a 5 yr. old Am mix. The Owner got her from a family member as a gift; he has owned Perky for over 3 yrs. The owner surrendered Perky because the owner no longer has time to care for him. He has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Perky is friendly playful. Perky has not lived with children but he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know (though he can play rough at times). Has never been around other animals so the owner has no idea how Perky would behave around them. Perky has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that Perky is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. Perky likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a friendly manor. The owner does not know how Perky is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Perky as friendly and playful with a high activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Perky tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Perky sleeps in the floor of the bedroom on a blanket. Perky was fed name brand dry dog food three times a day. He is house trained and has never had an accident in the home, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. Perky knows the commands “sit “. For exercise Perky is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day but does pull on the leash “mostly when excited”. Behavior during intake: Perky was very active with lose body, when approached by staff Perky attempted to playfully jump on the staff member. He allowed to be scanned (-), collared and placed in dog kennel. When we placed our leash on Perky he attempted to bite the rope like it was a tug of war rope. Perky would also bark loudly at other dogs in the neighboring kennel.
11/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Surrendered by his long time person for “no time”, Perky is understandably confused and a bit anxious as to why he’s in this new place with people, sounds and smells he doesn’t know. Ready to go out for a walk to go potty, we’re off to the park when business is done. Perky is pretty good on the leash, poses for photos like a rockstar, but it’s when I bring out my little squeaky toy that his eyes light up, he play bows and his tail wags. Our Perky loves toys!! We’re told that Perky is playful with strangers, has never lived with children but is relaxed around them, doesn’t guard his stuff, likes baths and being brushed, is housetrained, likes brisk walks on leash, and loves to play fetch with his person. Perky loved the plush toy I gave him so much he reveled in pulling it apart…..(RIP plush toy), so his new person should provide more indestructible toys. Perky may have played tug with his leash when a puppy, and likes biting up on it when first leashed, and then stops when we get moving. A harness may solve that problem, as well as some positive reinforcement training to learn that the leash is not a toy. Perky loves being petted, loved running around the playpen with his toy in his mouth, and loved meeting new people. He even gave the behavior assessor a soft kiss during his evaluation. I really, really liked our perky Perky and know that you will too. He’s looking for a home with an experienced dog person to be the best he can be. And that best is pretty darn awesome!
11/14/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unaltered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Relaxed/playful Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly and playful with a high activity level Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/14/2016 Look: 1. Dog lightly jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, ears neutral, body soft, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog does not pull back paw, lip lick Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold, body not stiff Summary: Difficult to remove from kennel, appears anxious and makes several attempts to grab/pull leash in. Once removed from kennel, Perky will again, attempt to grab leash and tug. When off leash in the assessment room. Perky is soft and allowed all handling. May benefit from training to learn leash manners, may benefit from walking with a harness. Dog-dog: (on-leash, through gate): Perky rushes up to the gate, body stiff, hard barks, air-snaps at other male, large dog. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/12/16 During his initial medical exam Perky allowed most handling but snapped when his mouth was touched. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Perky intensely grabs and holds on to his leash when attempting to place on him, and becomes increasingly aroused if handler continues to hold on to it. Alternate rope/leash-like items were offered to Perky for him to hold on to in order to safely leash him. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No young children (under 5)(Because Perky has displayed such anxious/frantic behavior during his stay at our care centers, we cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed due to this environment. A period of decompression is advised to aid in acclimating to a new home environment; force-free reward based training is recommended upon introduction/exposure to new and unfamiliar situations.) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
