Pepper was not taken to the vet and was born in the home. Pepper has lived with two adults and children aghes eight and older. She is described as fearful around strangers and keeps her distance. Pepper will bark and retreat. Pepper was tolerant towards the children in the home, she would allow them to pet her. Pepper lived with two other dogs a female and male pitbull. She was described as respectful and tolerant, she will engage in gentle play. She lived with two cats and was described as tolerant. Pepper has not bitten in her previous home. Pepper is walked three times a day and is used to leashed walks. She is well behaved in the yard. Pepper does not mind when her food is touched while eating or when a treat or toy is taken away. Pepper struggles when bathed and brushed. Pepper will bark when a stranger approaches the home. Pepper has a medium activity level. Pepper likes to chew bones and eats dry food. Pepper knows the command sit and stay. Upon intake Pepper had a tense body, she hard barked and lunged when cousnelor approached. Cousnelor was unable to scan due to temperment, he was collared and photographed with the assistance of the owner.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Pepper appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. _x_Single-dog home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to reactivity Pepper has displayed towards other dogs while here at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Pepper be the only dog in the home. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Pepper associate other dogs with things she enjoys, like toys or treats. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Though she has improved during his stay at our care centers, Pepper continues to give all appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable. Due to the consistent behavior displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends an experienced adult home only until she can acclimate to her new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended.

When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Pepper becomes reactive towards novel male and female dogs. According to Pepper’s previous guardian, with the other resident dogs Pepper was respectful and tolerant, she will engage in gentle play. Due to reactivity Pepper has displayed towards other dogs while here at the Care Center, the Behavior Department recommends that Pepper be the only dog in the home. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Pepper associate other dogs with things she enjoys, like toys or treats. 3/10: Pepper displays stiff body language and begins to hard bark at the novel female dog. A muzzle is placed on her before being allowed into the pen. When she enters the pen, she displays stiff body language as she rushes towards the other dog and jumps on his back. The session is ended. 3/11: When greeting a novel female dog, Pepper displays stiff body language and reacts by growling and muzzle punching the gate. They are not introduced. Pepper will begin to participate in counter-conditioning sessions.

Allowed all handling with soft muzzle, no growling or attempts to bite Evidence of Cruelty seen – No Evidence of Trauma seen – No Objective P = 100 BCS 3/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: Not performed due to behavior PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Female, prominent nipples, not lactating MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted, alopecia around dorsal cervical area, few collarettes at right inguinal region, mild generalized dermatitis and thin brittle hair coat CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: Underweight, dermatitis Plan: Rec 3x/day feeding. Temporarily waived from spay due to being underweight. Reweigh scheduled for one week. Good prognosis with appropriate diet.
