08/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Elderly Pepper and much younger Dolla were surrendered into our care as their owner was going through some difficult times. Sadly, those two well cared for pets, clearly family dogs, were left with us without any comments that could help us know them better. Pepper is 12 years of age. A kennel is not her place. She has set thoughts about this (and other things) and will bark to make you understand that she belongs outside her den. Show Pepper the leash and she will be ready for you. First, a pretty neckpiece, then off to the street where lovely Pepper eliminates at once. She is a dream to walk, is very relaxed meeting other dogs and looks at me, puzzled, when a little pooch barks aggressively at us. She is understandably a bit lost in this new world she had no knowledge about, but keeps doing what good dogs do, walking, sniffing, wagging her tail at gentle words and a caress, and trying to obey commands from a caretaker. We should not take this for granted. This is quite an achievement to try to keep yourself all together in a difficult situation. Pepper deserves our admiration and respect. She is an senior gal, true, in great shape, but she so belongs in a home, curling on a nice blanket in the living room and blessing her new owner with her loyalty and her love. Pepper is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to meet you. Another volunteer writes: Staff told me how awesome Ms. Pepper is, so I had to meet her for myself. She is!!! Gorgeous, spry, friendly and calm, she’s so happy to see a volunteer, leash in hand. Going potty right away indicates she’s housetrained, and she may even be curb-trained as she went right to the street to ‘go’. Her leash manners are great, she’s been gorgeously cared for, sits when asked, and then does a little hop step for her treat. So cute! There’s nothing ‘senior’ about Pepper except perhaps her chronological age, as she hops right up on the park bench to sit beside me. That’s a move for a dog half her age! She’s awesome, she’s fabulous, she’s amazing, she’s in need of a new home. Run, don’t walk to meet our lady Pepper today.
08/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pepper came to the care center as an owner surrender citing housing issues. Upon intake, she was quiet and calm. For her relief walk, Pepper walked well on leash. Once in the assessment room, she appeared calm and social. She averted her eyes during Look, body neutral, ears back. For Sensitivity, Pepper leaned into the assessor, mouth closed, ears back. During Tag, she followed at the end of the leash, body soft. She did not pull back her paw on either Squeeze attempt. She displayed minimal interest in Toy, sniffing it. When approaching another dog on leash at the care center, Pepper approached with tail at spine level, body soft. The Behavior Team recommends Pepper go to an Average home. It is recommended Pepper be given an appropriate period of decompression to help her acclimate to her new surroundings. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Pepper to new and unfamiliar situations. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with body neutral. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft body. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, tail wagging. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog sniffs toy. Dog to Dog: When approaching another dog on leash at the care center, Pepper approached with tail at spine level, body soft.
08/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Pepper engages in bouts of pushy play when solicited. She mounts the greeter dog during play. Pepper arrived with no available history of previous interaction with other dogs, and it is unknown how her behavior will translate into a home setting. The behavior team feels that Pepper should have a successful pre adoption interaction and slow introductions before placement into a home with other dogs.
