08/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You know how in Italian restaurants the servers often come out with fresh ground pepper and you have to tell them when you’ve had enough? Well, if they were instead giving out Pepper the dog I don’t think you’d ever tell them “when” — what a DOLL! She solicits attention from her cage by propping her paws up (and showing off that mommy figure!) and making incredibly soft eye contact. She pulls some on the leash, but is super wiggly and not at all disconnected. She has previously lived with children, is said to be well behaved when left alone, and is used to sleeping in her crate. She has the cutest bat ears and they are always tuned in to adventure! Pepper loves to play with toys and is a super star when it comes to commands (she loves her treats). She’ll eagerly sit, give me her paw and lie down. The latter quickly turns into a cuddle fest as she rolls over, presses her head into my legs, and shimmies around for belly rubs….sweet, sweet, sweet!! She is one of those dogs that makes you feel like you are the best person in the world…and it’s hard to get enough of that! Please come get your serving of Pepper at Brooklyn ACC.
08/08/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Pepper came to the care center as an owner surrender on 8/4/2016. Owner reported that she lived with children ages two and six and was relaxed and gentle with them. It is reported that she fought with the other female dog in the home and that she will bark and lunge at cats. Owner stated that Pepper is not bothered when her food is touched while eating or when a treat or toy is taken away. It is also reported that she likes to play fetch and to play with balls and rope toys, and knows the cues sit, come, stay, and down. She reportedly sleeps in her crate at night, well behaved when left home alone. Upon intake, Pepper was relaxed and allowed all handling. She was friendly upon entering SAFER assessment room. Pepper allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, relaxed. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, eyes soft and squinty, ears and tail neutral. Pepper was distracted and unresponsive to each pass of Tag game, focused on exit. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze items. Pepper kept a firm grip on Toy, body a bit stiff, required a treat in order to relinquish. When off leash with a male dog at the Care Center, Pepper greets him displaying soft body language. She spends most of her time exploring the pen and will offer a soft correction when he continually greets her. Due to her potential for possible possessiveness, the Behavior Team feels Pepper would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. Any other resident dogs should have an in depth interaction before considering adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 2. Dog keeps a firm grip, body a bit stiff, required treat to relinquish Dog-dog: When off leash with a male dog at the Care Center, Pepper greets him displaying soft body language. She spends most of her time exploring the pen and will offer a soft correction when he continually greets her.
08/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Pepper’s previous owner, Pepper had an altercation with the female dog in the home and would fight and had to be separated. Pepper displays soft body language when off leash with male and female dogs. She mostly keeps to herself as she explores the pen. She offers soft correction for males that attempt to mount her and may try and mount a female dog. The Behavior Department recommends a through dog-dog interaction be conducted with any potential adopter’s dog to ensure compatibility. 8/5: When off leash with a male dog at the Care Center, Pepper greets him displaying soft body language. She spends most of her time exploring the pen and will offer a soft correction when he continually greets her. 8/9: Pepper greets the male dog and mostly keeps to herself as she wanders in the pen. She softly corrects his attempts to mount her with soft air snaps and spinning her body away from him. 8/11: Today, Pepper met a female. She greeted the other dog at the gate with a soft body. Once in the pen, she exchanged a long sniff; focusing on the female’s genitalia area. She wanders the pen before reproaching the other dog and then air humping.
