08/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Penny came into the shelter as a stray on 8/9/16, so past behaviors in a home are unknown. Client stated that she kept Penny overnight and Penny was around children and was described as relaxed. Behavior during intake: Penny was a bit nervous so handling was done by the client. During SAFER Penny came into the assessment room playful and wiggly, she had a loose body posture when interacting with the assessor; she allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Penny was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment. Penny was easy to handle when engaged with the items. Penny appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears relaxed. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, closed mouth and tail down. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog mouths leash in a playful manner no pressure. Squeeze 1/2:1 Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-to-dog:Penny greeted a calm female with soft body and small bounces. She solicited play with a quick play bow when a second female was introduced to the group. She exchanged sniff with the other dog but did engaged in play.
08/10/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Penny was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Penny was initially nervous and chose to not interact with the other dogs. With further playgroup sessions, Penny has become more confident and solicits play with male and female dogs. She displays signs of barrier frustration, hard barking and jumping at the gate. Once she deescalated, she engages in high energy play. When play is not reciprocated, Penny may mount the other dog and anxiously whine. 8/10: Penny is very nervous as she avoids greeting the other dog. She exchanges a brief greeting with him before wandering in the pen with a tucked tail and low body. 8/11: Penny seems more confident today, greeting a female with a soft body. She followed the other dog a bit, exchanging sniff, before walking away to wander the pen. 8/12: Penny greeted a calm female with soft body and small bounces. When a second female was introduced to the group, she solicited play with a quick play bow. She exchanged sniff with the other dog but did not engaged in play. 8/13: Penny became reactive when greeting the other dog through the gate. She began to hard bark while jumping on the gate. It seems she became barrier frustrated. She was removed from the area; placed in another pen until she deescalate. After she calmed down, she was reintroduced to the other dog, while both handlers held their leash. She solicited play with body checks. When the other dog did not reciprocate her solicitations, she became frustrated once again, mounting the dogs flank. 8/15: Penny has become much more high energy and solicits play with paw slaps and body slams. Her play style may be overwhelming for some dogs, as she can become pushy and anxiously whines if she does not receive attention.
