05/13/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Penguin came to us a stray and we only have very limited information on how the finder and Penguin’s interaction went. The finder was reported to find Penguin in his backyard where Penguin initially seemed relaxed. Apparently when the friend of the finder’s daughter came out into the back yard Penguin began to growl. As the assessor went to go and protect his daughter’s friend it appeared that Penguin was going to react towards the finder. This is when a friend of the finder intervened and was able to contain Penguin though specifics of how this was accomplished are not given. While in our care Penguin has bitten a volunteer when interacting with them in the yard. When the volunteer started to speak to Penguin he was said to begin to growl and lunged at the volunteer. The volunteer put their arm up for protection but he was able to nip the volunteer on the arm and then walked to a corner appearing visibly fearful. A staff member was required to put him back in his kennel as he was growling at another volunteer that attempted to put him back in his kennel. When attempting to remove Penquin from his kennel he was said to be fearful and pulled a bit on his relief walk. As the assessor tried to collar Penguin he had frozen body language, and air snapped toward the assessor. Due to this reaction the handling items of the assessment were not conducted. He only displayed minimal interest in the toy on this portion of the evaluation. When on an on-leash dog interaction Penguin approached the helper dog with relaxed body language. Due to Penguin’s very fearful body language and bite history we recommend Penguin be placed with a New Hope partner at this time. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral.
