06/27/2016 WEB MEMO
Every once and while I meet a dog at the Care Center that totally grabs hold of my heart strings…. Well Penelope is that dog!!! In the busy, loud kennel area she sits so patiently for her turn to go out; looking at me every time I pass her. When I finally got to her kennel she eagerly went outside, did her business, she then gently solicited a back scratch from another volunteer every time she tried to stop (as I’m sure her hands were getting tired) Penelope looks up at her with her sad brown eyes and the back scratch continues and eventually leads to a belly rub. I get the feeling that Penelope was not well cared for before arriving at the shelter, she is skinny, has a thin coat and it appears as if she has had puppies. Penelope deserves a loving home, filled with endless back scratches and belly rubs. If your looking for a gem of a dog look no further Penelope is waiting with a back to be scratched. Please come to SIACC and meet her.?
06/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Penelope came in after a member of the public found her as a stray. She was friendly and allowed all handling during intake and her initial medical exam. Penelope allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, body soft. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, tail wagging. She playfully jumped during Tag game, at one point grabbing the leash, but relinquished it easily. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, sniffs assessor’s hand. Penelope kept a firm grip on Toy, loose body. She approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level. The Behavior Team feels Penelope would do well with an Average adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are relaxed Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
