A volunteer writes:

Glen of Imaal..What an exotic name for a little fluffy dog….who understands Turkish… Pemmie, a very pretty middle aged gal,  is with us as her family could not care for a pet anymore. Although she could use some grooming, Pemmie seems  to have been a beloved pooch. She lived and played with a child, mingled with her peers in the park, enjoyed and was affectionate toward her humans. She seemed to like things her way, though and might have liked to keep her treats and possessions all to herself . Pemmie would be very house trained, very well behaved when left alone and crate trained.  Pemmie is quite scared here at the care center. She is very hesitant to come out of her kennel. Who can blame her….So patience is needed and eventually, Pemmie came out of her den, went for a little walk, did her business and hid under a chair in the yard. A start…for us volunteers and staff to build a good relationship with this adorable  little girl.  Pemmie is at the Manhattan Care Center dreaming to be  once again..home and loved.

PROFILE:

Pemmie is fearful of strangers and growls when approached. She does better if she gets to approach them and if no sudden movements are made she will even be friendly. She lives with a child (5 years old) and is relaxed and playful with him for the most part but will growl if he goes near her food, toys, and treats. She plays both gentle and exuberantly with adults and gently with children. Pemmie enjoys meeting dogs in the dog park but will keep to herself if she doesn’t find the right dog to play with. She plays gently with them. She was bitten a few years back by a street cat and is now fearful of them. She has bitten a person, her owner, once about two weeks ago when they were playing. Her owner thinks it was because of the loud noises next door. She has never bitten another animal.

Pemmie is nervous during loud noises such as thunderstorms and will try to hide. She isn’t bothered when her owner takes away her food bowl but is nervous if someone else tries. She growls when her owner tries to take away bones or treats but will think she’s trying to play if it’s a toy being taken away. She isn’t bothered when pulled off of furniture and will struggle when initially held from something she wants. Her owner never woke her up from her slumber so it’s unknown how she would react. She loves baths and tolerates brushing. Pemmie will growl and snap when it’s time to have her nails clipped so her owner muzzles her. She barks when someone unfamiliar approaches her home and is alert once they come inside. She isn’t bothered when someone unfamiliar approaches her humans.

Pemmie is friendly, affectionate, playful, and excitable with her owner. She has a low activity level and when she’s ready to play enjoys tugging on stuffed animals and chewing on bones. Her owner loves how caring she is towards her. When her owner is home, Pemmie hangs under the table or on her bed next to her owner’s bed. She’s kept mostly indoors and sleeps in her own bed. She is very house-trained and never has accidents, always making it outside to grass or cement. She is well-behaved when left home alone and used to be crate-trained but doesn’t need it now. She knows sit in Turkish and enjoys off-leash dog parks for exercise. She pulls lightly on leash.
On intake, counselor got low and turned to the side to let Pemmie approach her. Pemmie growled so counselor backed off. She did not handle and had the owner collar, muzzle, and hold her for pictures.

Medical intake:
Observed Behavior – bared teeth, lunges. Muzzled. defecated during exam
