10/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I’m a certified “American” football lover so far less familiar with the “foot” oriented kind. But even I know Pele. Widely regarded as the greatest football player of all time, the mere mention of Pele is enough to drive Brazilians (and countless others) into a total frenzy. I don’t know if our 1.5 year-old Pele has QUITE reached superstar status yet but I know he’s not far off. He is a work of art with his two green pools for eyes, crimson triangles for ears, and those feet! Perfectly turned-out every time Pele shows off his “sit,” I can’t help but think they’re tailor made to give his namesake a “run” for his money. Pele loves his treats and he loves his toys but priority #1 is giving you sloppy kisses. He’ll give you one, sneak in another, then wait for it…here he comes…GOAL! One more for the road. Don’t wait around for the next World Cup when you can have your very own trophy at home today. Pele is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
10/05/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/05/16 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Pele pulls hard on leash. He appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. PLAYGROUP: Pele arrived as a stray, so in home behavior with dogs is unknown. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Pele engages in exuberant play. Pele attempts to mount when play slows down. He is reactive and barks toward dogs passing by outside the fence, unknown if this is due to the passing dog being male. He has not been introduced to a male dog in our care. The behavior department recommends slow introductions to ensure compatibility with resident dogs in a future home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/04/16 During his initial medical examination, Pele appeared nervous though tolerated all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.)
