03/25/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Excited to see a person approach his kennel, Peanut gives me a woof, and when I open his door, steps back so that I can leash him. Making a beeline for outside, he potties as soon as we’re out the door, and with business taken care of we head to the park. Peanut pulls on the leash, so a harness and/or some leash training will make it a nicer walk for both ends of the leash. He’s also a connoisseur of all good scents, and nothing goes unsniffed and unmarked. A stocky, well made little guy, Peanut hops up on the bench for some pictures, sits for treats, gives me that fabulous pittie smile, and rolls around on the grass waving his legs in the air. Fresh air feels so good! Off leash in the yard, he rolls around again after exploring the pen, plays with a soft toy and gets little bursts of playful energy. Peanut romps with females in playgroup, cuddles with staff, and wants to explore, sniff, play, and love everything around him. Looking for structure in his new home, Peanut is hoping you’ll ask to meet him today.
03/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Peanut A1106668 KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/21/17 Unaltered Male,Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 3/24/2017 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, tail wagging, ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, ears back, soft, tail wag Tag 3. Dog quickly escalates during game, jumps up, mouthing with no pressure, settles easily at end. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw Squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body away Toy 1: 1. Dog plays, keeps a firm grip, body loose Summary: Peanut was active, enthusiastic, and social throughout the assessment, displayed a low threshold for arousal as he escalated fairly quickly during the tag portion though recovered well. PLAYGROUP: Peanut has engaged playfully with female dogs in the care enter. He has not yet been introduced to male dogs during his stay. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Peanut and other social or tolerant dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/21/17 During his initial medical exam Peanut was tense ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Peanut so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center Peanut has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. Peanut will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Peanut. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5) – Peanut seems to become over aroused with quick movements and may be most comfortable in a home without very young children. Dog-savvy older children can be considered pending interaction. He has been quite human social with his caretakers in the care center.
Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition – Peanut has shown some mouthiness during Tag item. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors. His response to tag should be noted and steps taken to avoid games evoking similar responses in the future, in case this is a sign of discomfort or distress. Interactions with new people and new environments should never be forced.
