03/11/2017 WEB MEMO
Patrick Star is an interesting dog. He does take some time to warm up to an individual but it’s worth the wait. I was able to give him full body attention and petting. I have handled his floppy jowls and meaty paws. During time outside, off leash, he is quite very strong but also very playful. Patrick Star should be allowed slow introductions to persons he has not yet met. These introductions should be done with lots of treats and praise; he loves being told he is a good and handsome boy. I believe he would be most comfortable in a nice quiet home environment. Also, it has been told to me that he is very playful with other dogs during designated playgroup times. I enjoy spending time sitting with him and petting him through the bars of his kennel. He is rather fond of being sung to, and he is a Whitney Houston fan. He is deserving of our best efforts, as are all of the animals in the facility; but I know that he, especially, needs a little more understanding and love. I look forward to spending time with him each day and hope beyond hope that he can be live in some place safe and loving in his future.
03/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 3/9/17 Intact Male, Stray Other notes: Upon intake Patrick Star was hard barking inside the crate. He was not handled by admissions. When taken out of the crate, he lowered his body and his tail was between his legs. When spoke to he started to wag his tail in a low position. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 3/11/17 Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Summary: Patrick Star was stiff and wary when the assessor approached him to leash him. He would lip lick with whale eyes and constantly track humans movements around the assessment room. Out of concern for his stress level in addition to safety, a handling assessment will not be performed. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Patrick Star engages in play with female dogs but is reactive with male dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/9/17 During his medical examination, Patrick Star was lunging and required sedation for handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Patrick Star so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Patrick Star is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Patrick Star has shown some escalated warning behaviors in the care center. It is important to make sure Patrick stays under threshold and is not pushed to escalate further to a bite. _x_Recommends no dog parks (Due to Patrick Star’s reactivity towards male dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that he not be taken to dog parks at this time.)
03/09/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Patrick Star engages in play with female dogs but is reactive with male dogs. Patrick Star was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Patrick Star be placed with female dogs only. 3/9: Patrick Star greets a novel female dog displaying soft body language. He is slightly sexually motived, but does not attempt to mount. When the other dog solicits play, Patrick Star displays bouncy body language. 3/11: Patrick Star solicits and engages in gentle play with a playful female dog. 3/12: Patrick Star displays stiff body language and becomes reactive when greeting a male dog through the gate. They are not introduced.
