07/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Patty-cake, patty-cake…You couldn’t ask for a cuter little dumpling than Patrick and he’s such a goofball that I can’t stick to his formal name for long, not after seeing him repeatedly fumble a tennis ball like it was a hot buttered potato! Patty is a natural born clown and though he was a little shy on arrival, after a turn in doggie playgroup, lots of treats and a game of fetch he’s feeling fine and really letting his true colors shine. Well-trained yet impatient, soft-natured but jumpy as a cricket, friendly, pushy, smart and silly, Patty is all this and more. A little ruffian with a big heart and an even bigger appetite, he never guards his things and sits promptly for treats, gently taking my whole hand in his mouth as he eats them. But if I make him wait too long…*pop*…up he hops like a jack in the box to try and reach them. I tell him to sit again and he complies but gives me a look that says ‘those treats aren’t going to eat themselves, you know!’ Tiny as he is, Patty can still pull a bit on leash but once he’s taken care of his business and settled into a solid sniffing pattern we slow to a nice walking pace as he politely greets passing dogs and people with happy tail wags and a little exploratory swerve to check out their scent. No one loves to play fetch more than this guy but Patty just isn’t much of an athlete and watching him making a return run while constantly dropping the ball, kicking it out of reach then picking it up and starting the show all over again was the comedic highlight of my week. He’d be the perfect fit for a family as dog-savvy, active and full of fun as he is and we’re all hoping the ‘luck o’ the Irish’ will be on his side today. Ask for Patrick at our Manhattan Care Center and come prepared to laugh yourself silly!
07/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Patrick pulls a bit on the leash. He was excited but very interested in interacting with the handler during the assessment – jumped up, mouthy (light). Patrick continued to display a high level of excitement during handling, such as jumping up, mouthing, and was also hard to position. He showed no aggression. He followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag and grab at the leash at the end of the game but was not difficult to distract him away from it. Patrick took the toy away but had soft body language. Patrick is an active dog he needs a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that Patrick can go to an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Follows at end of leash, body soft, jumpy, grabbing at the leash but was easy to distract him. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.
07/21/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Patrick has mostly displayed behaviors rooted in sexual motivation Patirck is currently unaltered, and this should be taken into consideration. The behavior team feels that Patrick would do best if given time to acclimate to a new environment outside the care center before following up on his behavior with other dogs. Neutering is highly recommended before introducing him to dogs outside our care, though it can not be said for certain when and if his sexually motivated behavior would begin to decrease. He arrived as a stray so in home behavior history with dogs is not known. 7/21: When off leash with other dogs, Patrick is persistantly sexually motivated. 7/22 update: Patrick is sexually motivated despite repeated correction. 7/25: Patrick greets a spayed female politely, then roams away.
