A volunteer writes: This pooch is perfect in every way! He sat calmly and patiently as I approached his kennel and leashed him. Walking him is effortless as he stayed right by my side the entire time! His bathroom manners are also impeccable! Sitting on the park bench he lay down at my feet, perfectly content watching the world go by. As I sat there admiring everything about him I felt myself entering a state of peaceful nirvana. Who needs yoga classes with this guy in your life? Another volunteer writes: Those markings, that winning smile, the soft eye contact…have you ever seen a more handsome and lovable lug than Patch? With a heart as big as his well-rounded belly, all this gorgeousness is just the icing on an already sweet, family- friendly dog that anyone would be so proud to call their own. Adopted from AC&C as a youngster, Patch spent the last 8 years at the center of a loving home, living in happy harmony with his sister Phoenix (A1083017) and two little human siblings (a baby and a 5 year old) and charming the pants off every stranger he met whether they walked on two legs or four…well, every one except the neighborhood cats! Patch is fantastic on leash, seems very house trained, sits on command like a champ and loves to be snuggled almost as much as he loves his treats and when he smooches me in return he throws in a few bonus ear nibbles too! We’re told he has no problem sharing his toys or food, likes to play exuberantly with Phoenix, is respectfully gentle with his kids and doesn’t object to being bathed either. For a family dog used to bedding down at night snuggled up to his sister, returning to a lonely kennel is not something Patch is keen to do and it breaks my heart when he stops short and puts all his 70-plus pounds into a passive resistance effort that would do Gandhi proud. This big softie with his proven kid and dog-friendly cred would be a wonderful addition to almost any family, with or without the accompaniment of his beautiful sister. Patch knows where he belongs–safe, secure and snug in a family home–and we’d love to see him back in his element again ASAP. Will you be the lucky one who gets to take him home?
07/31/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Patch came into our center along with another similarly sized dog citing owner’s health issues. It is reported he lived with a newborn and 5 year old child, respectful and gentle. Owner reports Patch growls and barks at cats. It is reported Patch is not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats, and is housetrained to go outside. He allowed all handling during intake. Patch walked well on leash for his relief walk, only pulling when interested in something, he was very interested in chasing pigeons. He held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, low wagging tail. Patch stood still during Sensitivity item, body soft, mouth open. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. Patch did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. He playfully engaged with Toy, keeping a firm playful grip but eventually relinquishing. When off leash with other dogs, Patch greets well at the gate but becomes uncomfortable with face to face interaction. He becomes still, lip licks and offers a low growl. The Behavior Team feels Patch would do well with an Experienced adopter. Although he lived with another dog previously, he will require an in depth interaction if going to a home with another resident dog. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.
