A Volunteer Wrote: Until a few days ago, Paris lived with her family–five children, ranging from infants to adolescents, two dogs–in peace and love. When they were evicted, it was necessary to bring her here, but they didn’t leave until they had made it clear to all of us what an amazing girl she is: She lets the children touch her food while she eats, shares her toys, allows them to move her off the furniture or grab a hold of her, and doesn’t even mind storms or having her nails clipped. She’s house trained (she whines to signal its time to go out) and knows how to sit and lie down on command. According to her former family and behavior we witnessed walking her, Paris is wary of strangers–but only initially. Her former owners would crate her until she could adapt to them, but reports that within ten minutes she would be let out and be friendly and playful. During her behavior exam, despite her stress at suddenly being in this new environment and with a stranger, she lay down on her back to have her belly rubbed for the evaluator in far less time than that. Here’s to a life of no more stress and lots of belly rubs for Paris!
Another volunteer writes: Paris was sitting so quietly in her kennel that although I had met her earlier in the day in the rain, I wanted to spend time with her again now that we could be off leash in the yard. As her former owners advised, she takes a (very) short time to adjust to new people, and Paris was giving me kisses, snuggling next to me and rolling over for a belly rub in record time! We’re told she loves to play with toys, lived well with two other dogs, ignores people who pass while she’s being walked, but will growl if a stranger approaches until her former owner tells her to sit, gives her a treat and then that stranger becomes a friend. To spend time with Paris is to fall in love with Paris as she will fall in love with you. I was the happy recipient of lots of kisses in a very short time and know that you will be too.
PROFILE:
Paris is a 2 year old female Lab mix. Her family got her at 2 months old from her parents’ owners. They lost their home.
Paris is fearful of strangers initially but becomes friendly very fast. She lives w/ 5 children ages 0-10 and is relaxed, playful, tolerant and plays exuberantly w/ them. She lived w/ a small male dog and medium female dog. She was relaxed, playful, tolerant, and played exuberantly w/ the male from the beginning. At first, she avoided the female and growled if approached. After playing outside, she became relaxed, playful, tolerant, and played exuberantly w/ the female as well, w/in 3 days. Paris never bit anyone.
Paris doesn’t mind storms. She growls during loud construction. The children pet her and touch her food while she eats; she continues to eat at a relaxed pace with soft body. She doesn’t mind when someone takes her food/treat/toy, moves her off furniture, holds/restrains her, wakes her up, bathes her, trims her nails, or brushes her. When strangers first come over, her owner crates her. She growls at them for ~2 minutes. After ~10 minutes, he lets her out and she approaches them and is friendly, playful, and solicits belly rubs. On walks, Paris ignores strangers who pass. She growls at strangers who approach. If her owner talks to them and asks her to sit, she sits quietly, ignores the stranger, and then is friendly w/ them. She usually becomes friendly w/ strangers immediately (inside or outside) if they feed her a treat.
Paris’s family describes her as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, excitable, and high energy. She follows them and loves belly rubs. She plays fetch and chase and likes balls, stuffed toys, and chew toys. She lived inside and slept w/ her owners or in her open crate. She ate dry/ wet Blue Buffalo food. She’s housetrained, whines when she needs to go out, potties anywhere outside, and doesn’t have accidents. While home alone loose, she gets into trash if accessible. She sits, lies down, and stays when asked. She went for mostly off-leash walks and wandered but came back when called. On the leash, she sometimes pulls.
Paris approached me in Admissions w/ a soft body. She sniffed me and I talked to her and her tail wagged. She often stood up and gently leaned on me. She maintained this while I pet her, scanned her (-), collared her, and positioned her for pictures. She sat when asked and took treats usually gently. After her owner left, she whined and pulled towards the door.
BEHAVIOR:
Behavior of 5/29:
Paris came into our center as an owner surrender after housing issues. It is reported she lived with children ages infant-10, relaxed, playful, tolerant. Owner reports she also lived with a two other dogs, size small and medium-needed a few days to warm up to one of them but eventually was playful and tolerant with both. Owner reports Paris isn’t bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats, including the children. Owner states Paris will initially growl at strangers that come over or approach on walks, but will warm immediately asked to sit and if given a treat. It is reported Paris is housetrained and will whine when she needs to go out. She may get into trash if left out and she is home alone. Family describes her as friendly, affectionate, shy, and excitable. During intake, Paris sniffed admissions counselor, wagging tail, allowed all handling. She sat when asked and took treats gently. Paris pulled consistently on leash for her relief walk. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, relaxed. Paris stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, soft and relaxed. She playfully ran and jumped along during Tag game, a bit over-escalated mid game, grabbing leash and mouthing assessor’s arm with no pressure. Paris mouthed assessor’s hand with light pressure during both Squeeze attempts. She kept a firm grip on Toy, body loose. Owner reports she likes to play fetch and chase, likes balls, stuffed and chew toys. When off leash with other dogs, Paris exhibits social, appropriate behaviors with male and female dogs. The Behavior Team feels Paris would do well with an Experienced adopter. She may benefit from a slow approach/slow introduction, possibly with treats. Paris may benefit from obedience classes to learn leash manners and body awareness in regards to jumping up/mouthing. She may also benefit from walking with a harness.
