Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/18/16 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Summary: Papa is very friendly and playful towards the assessor. He does pull hard on leash and can be pushy in his soliciting of attention and affection. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Papa was brought in as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Papa spends most of his time keeping to himself as he explores the pen in a group of calm male and female dogs. Papa is slightly sexually motivated, licking the female’s genital areas, but does not attempt to mount. He greets a male dog, initially uncomfortable and standing tall, but is able to relax with further greets. The Behavior Department recommends that Papa be placed in a home with dogs that match his calm sociability and that a proper dog-dog interaction be conducted pre-adoption to ensure compatibility. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/18/16: During his medical examination, Papa is friendly, attention seeking and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Papa has a very high activity level in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous experience) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Papa has been social and extremely interested in interacting with his human caretakers in the care center. However, he is a young and highly active dog and is surprisingly strong. He jumps frequently for attention and can be difficult to redirect onto four-on-the-floor behavior. We recommend daily mental and physical exercise, feeding with puzzle feeders, long-lasting chews, and force-free, positive reinforcement-based guidance to learn to appropriately interact with his humans.
