11/05/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes (as told by Papa): Hey – my name is Papa…..I’m told I’m a gorgeous brindle boy (blush, but it’s true), my weight is good, my new friend volunteer loves my white socks on my front paws, and she just laughed with me a lot. We had fun! I was a little nervous leaving my kennel at first as I didn’t know her, but she was gentle and talked softly to me, and I also needed to go potty really badly, so I let her take me out. After taking care of my business (whew!) I let Volunteer take me to the park ( I walk pretty nicely on leash), where she put a bow tie on me and needed me to pose for some pictures. She told me good pictures will help me get adopted, and I think that means find a new home – and I’m all for that! So I sat and I posed and when that was over we went back to the building and we played off leash for a while. I know how to sit for treats, but sometimes get so excited about having a treat that I jump up and forget my good manners. I never forget to take them gently though – I do know about fingers so I’m careful. Volunteer let me play with some toys and, true confession, I like pulling apart the soft ones and seeing the stuffing come out. She told me I need to make sure to have some sturdy toys in my new house…so, just letting you know about that. So, that’s my story…..I’m a good boy who needs an experienced person to guide me and love me, and I’m ready to be your bestie forever and ever. Deal? Deal!

Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog escalates quickly, grabs leash, requires reset out of the room. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog moves body away Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 2. Dog playfully engages, keeps a firm grip, not stiff Summary: Papa became very focused on grabbing the leash several times during the assessment, each time requiring a walk out of the room to reset. May benefit from a calm, quiet, structured environment. PLAYGROUP: 11/2: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Papa is cautious of approach and initially turns his head away from greeting. He approaches and very briefly sniffs the female greeter when her back is turned. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/2/16 During his initial medical exam Papa was tense and nervous and resisted handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience _X_No young children (under 5) (Papa has been observed to startle upon certain approach/movement, for this reason a home without young children is advised.) Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) 11/5 IN SHELTER UPDATE: Papa is fearful in the shelter environment. He will hide in the back of his kennel and when attempting to remove him he will snap at the handler. Outside of his kennel he will warm up over time and become social with familiar handlers. The behavior department recommends Papa find placement outside of the care center as quickly as possible to assure he does not further rehearse these behaviors.
11/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Papa is fearful in the shelter environment including when he is around other dogs. He will actively avoid interaction and offer defensive correction when approached. He arrived to the care center as a stray, so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends not placing Papa into a home with dogs at this time. Once he is able to decompress and acclimate to his new environment, introductions with resident dogs can be considered. 11/2: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Papa is cautious of approach and initially turns his head away from greeting. He approaches and very briefly sniffs the female greeter when her back is turned. 11/4: Papa is fearful, offering defensive corrections when approached and staying near handlers legs. With repeated approach and eventual solicitation he mounts and growls until handler correction is offered.
