02/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/19/17 Intact Male, Stray Other notes: Upon intake Palmo did not allow staff to collar, he growled at staff when they approached at first. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/21/17 Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Palmo bared his teeth at the assessor with stiff body language and had whale eyes. He was not interested with the handler. Due to the behavior displayed and out of concern for his stress level, Palmo is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: Palmo was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Palmo is social, checking in on the other small male and female dogs as he explores the pen. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/20/17 During his medical examination, Palmo was very reactive and will try to bite the technician. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Palmo has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because he is so uncomfortable, Palmo does not tolerate any form of human-touch and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
