A volunteer writes: A little meatball!!! Paco is so quiet in his kennel, patiently waiting his turn for a walk, is leashed easily and steps down with his short little legs. He’s so tiny, so adorable, truly a little meatball, and I say that in the fondest way. He seems to be housetrained, pulls a bit on leash, gets super excited to see a bunch of kids playing ball in the park, and I can’t tell whether its the kids or the ball that has him so happy — or maybe both. It’s terribly hot, so I brought a bowl with me and offered Paco a drink which he happily accepted, and then lay down froggy-style in the shade of the park bench. Paco is a bit camera shy, turning his head away from my camera, so it’s hard to capture just how cute this little guy is. He’s the perfect weight for his size, his nails are trimmed, he’s affectionate, giving me some wet kisses, and loved laying quietly to watch our little park world go by. Paco loved watching other dog pass by, and in his first group session, enjoyed some gentle play with the female greeter dog. This little dude is hoping you’ll stop by to meet him today, as a soft home is what he’s wishing for. Be sure to ask for him when you visit.
A volunteer updates: The first time I met Paco, it was a brutally hot and humid day, and we were all moving in very slow motion. I’d like to introduce you to the dog I met again on a cool summer morning — meet Paco loco!! Fun, bouncy, playful, tail wagging, smiling a megawatt smile, little Paco was running, chasing a ball, getting the zoomies and having the best time. Talk about a fun little meatball! Of course, going potty was his first priority, and then it was hugs and play, play and hugs! I’m not sure who had more fun, him or me just watching him enjoy himself. If you’re ready to spend your days with a fun little dude, no need to go to the movies or find outside entertainment when you have it right at home, Paco is hoping you’ll stop by to meet him today.
07/05/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/3/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/5/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Paco displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment, jumping up on the assessor repeatedly. He was social throughout and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Paco has had limited interaction with dogs in the care center. Paco displayed soft, playful behavior when greeting the female greeter dog, at times also displaying the intention to mount. Paco has not yet been introduced to a male dog in the care center. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Paco and tolerant female dogs at this time. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Paco allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: During his initial medical exam, Paco was sweet, active, and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Paco so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the high level of jumping and activity seen in the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Paco displays a high level of jumping at the care center. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
