I am a male black and white pit bull mix. The shelter thinks I am about 5 YEARS old.

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 03/28/2015 from NY 10303, owner surrender reason stated was FIRE. I came in with Group/Litter #K15-008223.

A volunteer writes: Walking Lex is a must when I am at the care center. I miss him when I am not there….He is a measly chap that is taking a big place in my heart…Lex is a quiet little pooch, waiting very still right in the middle of his blanket, in his kennel, all eyes on the scene around him and on me when I arrive….His den is always clean. He is so house trained. Lex is so ready for his walk and company. He is tiny, dark as night and a bit on the thin side, a contrast with the 3 adult housemates he came in with, all victims of a big fire. Lex was wheezing upon arrival, coughing and could barely open his gentle brown eyes. He let me wipe the secretions blinding his vision. His face was all strained, one of his paws was up…What a good patient he was. Lex is quite obedient, well mannered, sits on command and a bit on the shy, submissive side. He indulges in hugs and caresses and has so much to give back. He loves treats but does not snatch them from my hand. He is curious of other dogs, pulls toward them but not in an unfriendly way. He never misses a chance to nuzzle the puppies (may be his…) housed in the kennel next to his. Lex is very dear, sweet and affectionate. He is at the Manhattan Care Center, recovering from smoke inhalation and hoping to be soon…home where he belongs… Another volunteer writes: Little tiny miny Lex was left behind with mama Shay as their owner who lost her home in a big fire, took back only her much older dogs…Lex is very different from his pack…He is very small to start with and seems to have endured a harder life. Very old scars can be seen on his face only, he is quite thin and hungry, seems house trained, and he goes toward other dogs but crouches to the ground when one is a bit too forward with him. He cowers when I throw a ball. And he is such a good boy, so friendly, welcoming and highly affectionate. What is Lex’s story? Take a guess..or not but mostly, think of giving him a home where he will be safe, cared for and loved. At the end of the road should be a castle..yours.

Lex walks calmly on leash. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Lex was shy and nervous during handling, with stiff or fearful body language. He had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. Lex was not interested in food toys or rawhide he hides behind the handler with his tail low and only the end is wagging. Lex approached other dog with friendly/playful body language. Lex seen to be fearful of the shelter environment, the behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. Lex was very comfortable around the helper dog. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful; his tail is low. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is low, fearful body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Food: No interest. Toy: 1. No interest. Rawhide: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: 1. Dog approaches the helper dog in play position. His mouth is open. Helper: A1031699
