06/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Forget that other guy, this Pablo is the true work of art! 70-plus pounds of hubba hubba hunkiness topped with the cheeky smile of a mischievous-yet-lovable goofball, he’s a young Prince who lives for fun and can’t wait to share it with everyone he meets. Pablo leashes easily, pulls excitedly for the door and uses the facilities as soon as we hit the pavement then once business is out of the way it’s all paws on deck for a socializing and toy chasing fiesta! A great doggie teammate, he greets other pups with open-hearted joy and enthusiastic running and leaping play and I’ve no doubt he’d be a star with like-minded friends at the dog park. Pablo’s still just a bouncy baby and at his size that’s a lot to handle but luckily for me, he likes his treats and already knows commands for come and sit and will follow them nicely before gently nibbling a reward from my hand. Much as he appreciates his food, the true love of Pablo’s life is toys, toys, toys and it seems I made a wise choice (or not so, if I ever wanted it back!) in two small tennis balls tied together with rope. He tosses them, lays down and munches them, runs delightedly from one pen to another holding them in his mouth and even rejects another toy and more treats in favor of returning to his favorite. Re-leashing becomes an energetic game of keep-away as Pablo sprints off with his prize before I can get close but eventually the toy is tossed from the pen and we chill out for a bit before he walks nicely back to his den and curls up on the bed looking for all the world like a perfect not-so-little angel. If you’re searching for a low-key couch potato then our resident masterpiece is not for you, but if you like living large and with all your heart then come meet your soul dog at our Manhattan Care Center. A lifetime of adventure awaits and his name is Pablo!
06/01/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/30/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/30/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on assessor and grabs leash. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Pablo displayed a high amount of activity and movement during his assessment, jumping up on the assessor repeatedly. He was social throughout the assessment and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Play Skill Novice: These dogs lack appropriate skills to engage in proper play. They may become stuck on one behavior; lack pauses or breaks in play and often ignores warning signs from other dogs to slow down. Play should end when the other dog in the didactic pair signals it is over. PLAYGROUP: Pablo engages in exuberant play with dogs in the care center, though at times ignores warning signs from dogs who are uncomfortable with continuing play. The behavior department recommends that Pablo be placed into a home with others who are social, or tolerant of exuberant play. Pablo may benefit from additional socialization to help him learn appropriate play skills around other dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/31/17 During his initial medical exam, Pablo was active and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Pablo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: When outside and engaged with toy items, Pablo has been observed to freeze, hard bark with any approach. Pablo has been observed to trade for other toys though we recommend appropriate and safe management when attempting to modify this behavior. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to Pablo’s low threshold for arousal and his large size and strength in addition to potential guarding challenges, we recommend an adult-only home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Pablo has been observed to growl and freeze when engaged with toys in the care center, unable to readily refocus and trade. We recommend that Pablo be left alone while eating, and that guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Pablo’s mouth, and any time something is removed he should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. He should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games. _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Pablo jumps up a lot. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: Pablo has shown some mouthiness in the care center. Little pressure is applied, but this is a behavior that should be extinguished through training alternate behaviors and lack of reward (ex. walking away whenever Pablo’s teeth make contact with skin). _X_Strength/leash pulling: Pablo is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
