07/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Handsome Ozzy is in the house, and we’re in love! From those adorable fold-over ears and brown-with-a-sliver-of-blue eyes to his velvety fur and constantly wagging tail, Ozzy is an absolute delight from tip to toe. A good leash walker and apparently house trained, he takes care of all his business outdoors and strolls sedately, pulling only to meet other dogs with a happy tail and cute little play-with-me whines. Ozzy loves to explore, and everything from a pile of sticks to the kids splashing in a nearby pool is a reason to perk up and take note, and he’s so keen to discover everything all at once, he could give Curious George a run for his money! There’s only one thing guaranteed to grab Ozzy’s attention and hold it for hours, and that’s his fellow dogs. Large or small, he can’t wait to meet them all, and even a harsh reception from a grumpy old Pug in the park is like water off his sleek back, he’s totally cool with the rebuff and simply moves on to meeting a new four-legged friend instead. Easy to handle, easy to love and very easy on the eye, Ozzy would be a great fit for almost any home, but he’s really really hoping for one where he can share his days (and maybe even his bed!) with a furry brother or sister or two. If it’s time to add a playful new puppy to your pack, why not Ozzy? Meet him once and you’ll love him as much as we do!
07/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/2/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/3/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Ozzy displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment. PLAYGROUP: When given time to become comfortable, Ozzy displayed interest in greeting and engaging playfull with the polite, female helper dog. The behavior department recommends that future introductions to resident dogs be conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Ozzy was social. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/2/17 During his initial medical exam, Ozzy was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Ozzy so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Ozzy is very reluctant to go back into his kennel at the care center, panicking and attempting to flee when efforts are made to put him back in. We do not know if this behavior will present in any form outside of the care center. If it does, force-free, reward based training should be used to work with him on it and adopters should be gentle and patient with him.
