I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 10/15/2016 from NY 10472, owner surrender reason stated was ATT PEOPLE.

10/15/16 17:47 Oscar barks and growls when strangers approach him or the house and will jump to try to bite or nip at them. Around children he growls at them but keeps his distance. He has been around one other dog that he got along with but usually barks when seeing other dogs.. He has not been around other cats. Oscar is not house trained and uses the bathroom in the house daily. When on walks he is easily distracted by external stimuli so doesn’t use the bathroom. He will destroy anything and everything that he can reach or is not taped done ro secured. He really likes to rip paper. He will bite you if you touch his food while eating and if there is cat food around he gets protective of that as well. If someobody has a plate of food he will bite them to get to it and if they try to push him back he will bite the arm. He does not mind if you take his toys or treats from him. He struggles when being given a bath and tolerates being brushed for short periods but will try to run. Oscar has a very high level of energy.He folows his owner around the house. When left in the yard he runs back and forth barking at neighbors and passerbys. Crate training was attempted but he will bite if try to put into crate. he knows that a whistle means come. He likes squeaky toys and plush toys. he pulls hard when on leash and will run away if walked off leash. He is fed puppy chow dry food and caesars wet food. Owner handled for oscar due to his apprehensiveness with councilor and growling.

It should be noted Oscar warmed up to handler that took him out of kennel, would jump into handler’s lap for comfort, did not warm up to assessor. PLAYGROUP: MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/15/2016: Med Blue During Oscar’s initial medical exam, he was tense, baring teeth and growling, but warmed up with time. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Oscar has attempted to snap multiple times during his stay at our care centers, for this reason, we believe Oscar would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Oscar has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling. It is recommended that Oscar be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating him to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Oscar to new and unfamiliar situations.)
