Basic Information:: Orion is approximately a 1 year old male black and white small mixed breed dog. Orion lived with previous owner for about a week and was given to owner. Orion was surrendered because he bit the resident dog and because he was aggressive towards people. Orion has no injuries or health issues and has not been taken to the vet recently.

Previously lived with:: Orion previously lived with two adults and one dog.

How is this dog around strangers?: Orion is fearful and aggressive with strangers. Orion will bark, snap and growl at strangers who approach him. Orion will not allow strangers to pet him.

How is this dog around children?: Orion has previously interacted with children aged 5 and 17 years old. Orion will bark at both children and will not allow to be pet.

How is this dog around other dogs?: Orion previously lived with one male small mixed breed dog. Orion is described as being attached to the dog as he would like to sleep with him on the same bed, eat with him and play with him. Orion is described as being very pushy and dominant and has previously bitten the other dog causing a small bloody puncture wound on the mouth.

How is this dog around cats?: Orion has never interacted with cats.

Resource guarding:: Orion’s previous owner has never tried to touch his food or bowl while he is eating. Orion growls when a toy, treat or object is taken away and he will begin to play tug.

Other Notes:: Orion is not bothered when being pushed or pulled off of furniture. He is also not bothered when being bathed. Orion is afraid when having his coat brushed and will bark, growl and snap. Orion will also bark, growl and snap when his nails are trimmed and when an unfamiliar approaches him and his owner.

For a New Family to Know: Orion is a playful, pushy, aloof and fearful dog. When at home, Orion will follow his owner around and likes to be in the same room as them. Orion also likes to follow around the resident dog he used to live with. Orion was kept as an indoors only dog and was taken out for slow walks on the leash in the morning. Orion was free-fed dry food everyday and is house trained to use wee-wee pads. When left home alone, Orion is left in a room with a baby gate in the door way and is well-behaved. Orion has never been walked off the leash for fear that he may run away.

Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Orion be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Orion to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Orion to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Orion presents with outside of the care centers.

Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Orion’s previous owner reported that he will growl and snap at people who approach him. It is important to always go slow and give Orion the option to walk away from any social interaction. Orion should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Orion’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Orion would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
