Orion
Hello, my name is Orion. My animal id is #18811. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 20-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive to other animals.
Orion is at risk for behavior reasons. Orion can be nervous and fearful, and prone to resource guarding. He is reported to bark at and chase children. For these reasons, we are seeking placement only with a New Hope partner, and suggest that he be placed in a home without young children. Medically, Orion had a mild ear irritation when he arrived at the care center, which has resolved, and we now have no medical concerns for Orion.
My medical notes are…

Upon intake, Orion would run away and pull on the leash when I approached him as his owner held his leash. Orion allowed me to collar him and take a picture. After his owner left, Orion walked by my side without pulling. Orion allowed me to crouch down to his level and pet him on the head and along the top of his body. Orion would look at me and then look away, licking his lips twice. Orion allowed me to pick him up and place him into his kennel.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Orion’s history of barking at and staying away from children, we recommend an adult only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Orion be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Orion to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Orion to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Orion presents with outside of the care centers.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Orion’s previous owner reported that he will growls when a toy, treat, or object is taken from him. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Orion’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Orion’s previous owner reported that he will growl and snap at people who approach him. It is important to always go slow and give Orion the option to walk away from any social interaction. Orion should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Orion’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Orion would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
