02/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/25/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/28/17 Look: 5. Dog snaps. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Organza is very fearful in the care center, backing away, snapping, and growling when first approached. Given time and a slow approach, she warmed up to the assessor and allowed petting and holding. She became very fearful when her collar was handled and when on leash. She snapped during look so the rest of the handling items were omitted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs Organza is uncomfortable and offers defensive correction when approached. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/25/17 During his initial medical exam, Organza was growling, lunging, and snapping. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Organza so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, she displays a moderate activity level. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Organza appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Organza has not acclimated well to the kennel environment, lunging and snapping when people approach her. She has shown she is social towards human and with a slow approach and time she will seek out attention. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Though she has improved during her stay at our care centers, Organza continues to give all appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable. Organza will need time to warm up to to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch, barking, snapping, and growling. We recommend allowing Organza to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations.)
