ENERGY LEVEL: Oreo has displayed a moderate level of energy during his stay at the care centers.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_ No dogs in the home. _x_ No dog parks. _X_No children (under 13): Oreo has been extremely timid and hesitant to interact during his time at the care center. This, in addition to his previous owner’s notes, causes us to feel that Oreo will be most comfortable and most likely to thrive in an adult-only home. _X_New Hope Only: Due to the intensity/severity of Oreo’s dog reactivity in addition with some noted concerns, the behavior department believes placement with a New Hope rescue would benefit him best at this time to further assess this behavior in a stable environment before permanent placement in a home. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended when introducing or exposing Oreo to new and unfamiliar situations Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: See known history, Oreo appears to become uncomfortable with some forms of handling and recommend pairing positive things with handling, such as the use of treats to associate touch with good things. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Oreo has snapped during his stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Oreo to new and unfamiliar situations.
03/04/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Oreo’s previous owner, Oreo lived with another dog and it was friendly, relaxed, playful and tolerant. 3/4: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Oreo displays soft body language when greeting a novel female dog. He is sexually motivated, persistently mounting her after the handler interrupts. 3/5: Today we were conducting same-sex greetings with our male social greeter dog. Oreo approached the gate and tensed his body slightly, they exchanged both face and genital sniffs, then Oreo walked away and explored the yard. After several seconds one handler brought Oreo back over to the gate to greet a second time. Again, they exchanged sniffs and Oreo did not display any posturing that caused concern but rather seemed disinterested. The gate was opened and both dogs greeted off leash but Oreo’s posture stiffened. One handler grabbed his leash to move him away and end the session but he jumped onto the social greeter dog and bit his neck and cheek area while flailing. He managed to throw the greeter dog onto the ground and continued to bite his head, mouth and finally grabbing hold of his cheek. He did not release after the handlers used every safety device including the air horn. He finally did release when the handlers used the “feed the bite” method.
