04/15/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/15/17 20:33 Basic Oreo is a spayed American Staff mix. She is 2 yrs old. Her owners got her from ACC. They are surrendering because she bit another dog last night. She has not had illnesses or health problems and was last seen by a vet 1 week ago for vaccines. Socialization Around strangers Oreo is very friendly and outgoing. She does not like people on wheels (ex: wheel chairs), she will bark and pull towards that person. She has not spent time with children. She plays exuberantly with adults. She has been other dogs but is not allowed to play with them because she is clumsy and pushy. She has not been around other pets, but will try to chase after squirrels and street cats. She has never bitten a person, but did bite a dog yesterday leaving a puncture wound and the dog will be okay. Behavior Oreo does not have behavioral problems, her owners found her to be well-behaved. She isnt bothered during loud noises. She isnt bothered when someone touches her food while eating/takes a treat or toy out of her mouth/pushes her off furniture/holds or restrains her/touches her feet/unfamiliar approaches her house or family member (she does not even bark during these instances). Her owners have never tried to bathe her or brush her. For New Family Oreo is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful. She can also be confident and pushy. Her activity level is medium. Her owners loved how good she was at home and with them. She loves to play fetch inside and tug. She likes to play with squeaky toys and chew/bones. She has been kept mostly indoors and sleeps locked in her crate in the living room. She eats wet and dry food 2xday. Her favorite treat is real chicken meat. She mostly housetrained and has accidents a few times a week when her regular walk is missed. She goes potty on the grass and cement. She is well-behaved when left alone. She was being crate trained and did well for up to 7hrs. She knows “sit, come, down” commands. For exercise she loved going jogging with her owners or brisk walks on leash. She pulls hard on the leash but was starting to calm down. When off leash in the dog park, by herself only, she would wander but came when called and sometimes kept her distance and was easily distracted by other dogs. During intake Oreo was friendly with a wiggly body and allowed all handling. She had a low wagging tail and would repeatedly roll over exposing her belly and allow people to rub her belly.

03/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: A symphony of greys, a blend of spots of all sizes, golden eyes, an athletic while elegant female. This is Oreo, an attractive young gal who is with us for no fault of her own but housing matters. Oreo is quite welcoming in her kennel. She has a hopeful and engaging face (even that she does look quite serious) and a waggy tail. She is a great walker, pulling only at times. She does her business on the way, indicating that if she is actually taken out, she could be fully house trained. She sits on command, accepts a scarf around her neck and poses obediently for pictures. Oreo is a friendly and sociable dog, but determined and assertive. She likes to do things her way, and when she has decided to do something, like meeting another dog in an adjacent pen, she will ignore treats and balls. Oreo will wag her tail, play bow, and insist on getting to know her neighbor. This can only be done during playgroups, my dear. Oreo is very disappointed. In pack with her peers, Oreo is quite an active participant, play bows, chases and sometimes gets a little carried away. Maybe her Catahoula’s genes are taking over? Indeed, this breed, the Louisiana flagship dog, was used as a working dog to round up pigs, among other tasks. Oreo enjoys petting and will sit very close to me for caresses and hugs. She comes with excellent comments from her former owner and will make once again a great pet to the new master who will welcome her as a forever best friend. Come an meet our lovely tomboy, Oreo at the Manhattan Care Center. She is waiting for you!
A volunteer adds: Oreo is so calm in her kennel and so lively outside. This is how I picture her in a home.. Relaxing on a soft pillow, chewing on a bone, rolling on the side for belly rubs, then bringing the leash to her master for a romp through Central Park and a frisbee or a ball game. She is so beautiful, unique looking but also a great gal, so fun to be with and a sweet cuddler too. I would never miss a visit to Oreo’s kennel when I am at the care center. I love to see her and spend time with her but each time my heart beats faster, hoping that she will not be in her den and dreaming that I will be told. She has been adopted.

Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 /2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away Summary: Oreo was friendly and sociable towards the assessor and the assistant.
PLAYGROUP: According to one of the previous adopters of Oreo, she lived with a male Pitbull and was described as “playful”, and it was cited that they “ran around the home together”. During her stay at the care center she has exhibited an exuberant play style but is often pushy and not respectful of dogs when they are not comfortable or when they offer correction. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Oreo and any potential resident dogs. Most recently, Oreo returned into our care with the previous MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 01/02/17 Oreo was calm, allowed all handling during the initial exam. ENERGY LEVEL: Oreo is reported to have a medium energy level in the home environment in line with what is seen at the care centers. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No cats Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Oreo is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Oreo has been observed to display some reactivity on leash such as pulling towards other dogs in addition to vocalizing. We recommend tools (i.e. head harness) and high-value treats to redirect Oreo on leash and to reward calm behavior in addition to teaching her how to focus on her handler rather than other dogs. We recommend only force-free, reward based training.
01/03/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
PLAYGROUP: According to one of the previous adopters of Oreo, she lived with a male Pitbull and was described as “playful”, and it was cited that they “ran around the home together”. During her stay at the care center she has exhibited an exuberant play style but is often pushy and not respectful of dogs when they are not comfortable or when they offer correction. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Oreo and any potential resident dogs. Oreo’s caretakers should exercise caution when conducting greetings between Oreo and other dogs. Brooklyn Care Center: 1/3: When off leash at the Care Center, Oreo displays an assertive posture when interacting with a novice male. She offers brief play bows and engages in chase play with a stiff body. She eventually begins to target the other dog and is slow down by handler interruptions. 1/5: Oreo displayed very conflicting behavior during her play session shifting from loose, wiggly play to assertive posturing (standing over and stiffening) and correcting the other dog for soliciting play. Manhattan: 3/15: Oreo engages in pushy play with male and female dogs. She initially becomes aroused and tense when solicited with chase play and begins to follow after and nip the other dog.
