Medical Summary Estimated age: 6-8yrs Microchip noted on Intake? yes (985121005206527) Found by police on boardwalk in Far Rockaway. comes into room sniffing and exploring environment, but not interested in interacting with humans, refuses treats, tail tucked; little restraint required; low level warnings including freezing and submissive grinning; allows ears to be cleaned  T = NA P = wnl R = wnl BCS 8/9 EENT: Peri-ocular erythema, mild mucoid discharge; ears cropped – large amount brown waxy debris and erythema AU, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: Grade 2-3/4 dental dz PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Difficult to palpate due to obesity, nsf U/G: vulva and nipples are formed so likely had puppies at some point, but there is a large scar spanning from umbilicus caudally toward pubis so suspect she is spayed, but cannot be 100% sure it isn’t from a c-section MSI: Ambulatory x 4; severe crepitus both stifles, skin free of parasites, large marble-sized mass right thorax, skin is generally flaky and erythematous with areas of alopecia and lichenification; fur comes out in paint-brush-tip looking clumps CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: not performed Assessment: Obesity, Moderate-severe dental dz, Chronic otitis/dermatitis (DDx: Food allergy, Atopy, Open), OA and/or DJD of stifle joints Plan: Recommend rescue placement or to experienced adopter willing to take on multiple health issues that are likely going to be lifelong. Mass on right thorax should have FNA with cytology sent to outside lab to determine likelihood of neoplasia (cancer) and if it should be removed. Ideally dog would get dental prophy and mass could be removed at that time. Also recommend limited ingredient diet for possible food allergies. If ear and skin issues persist after treatment, recommend referral to dermatologist. Cleaned AU and applied Otibiotic during exam. Continue ear cleanings EOD and Otibitoic twice daily x 7d, then recheck. Put on for chlorhexidine baths EOD. Hesistant to start on oral abx without skin C&S in case dog is MRSP carrier. Prognosis: Fair-Good SURGERY: Suspect dog is already spayed

A volunteer writes: The police officers that found Orchid on the boardwalk in Far Rockaway are the first in a long list of people that have had their hearts stolen by Orchid…it’s impossible not to fall head over heels for her!  She has her bashful moments but is completely sweet and friendly.   Sometimes she channels a beached walrus in her cage, and I hand feed her treats while she prepares herself to get up; other than her mouth, the only part of her that moves is her wagging tail!  She is really overweight, has some dermatological woes, and may be arthritic so she is very, very slow moving (really, a walk with her is the perfect time to do some mindfulness exercises), but likes to go out and about to do her business (she seems housebroken), get some sun and explore.  She has displayed soft body language with other dogs in our playgroups and was very sweetly interested in a small dog we met through a fence.  She is quietly wiggly in her own way, appreciates having someone to sit with her and watch the world go by, and even howls in her cage sometimes after I put her back.  She might be past her prime, but she is meant to be someone’s sunshine…please come see this sweet, sweet lady at Brooklyn ACC!

SAFER ASSESSMENT:

Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.

Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.

Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Toy: 1. No interest.

Summary: Orchid was social and friendly. She allowed all handling. No concerns were seen during the handling assessment.

PLAYGROUP:

When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Orchid displays soft and social body language in groups of calm male and female dogs. She is utilized as a greeter dog, tolerating a range of behaviors from the novel dogs. Orchid was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Orchid be placed with resident dogs that match her calm sociability.

4/15: Orchid displays soft body language when greeting a novel male dog. She mostly keeps to herself as she explores the pen.

4/16 – 4/18: Orchid greets calm female and male dogs with a soft body and keeps to herself as she explores the pen. She is tolerant of attempts to mount her and walks away from reactive dogs.

4/19-4/24: Orchid is social and may solicit gentle play with bouncy body language. She corrects when a high-energy dog solicits play from her.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:

Orchid was intially a bit uncomfortable not interested in interacting with humans, refuses treats, tail tucked; little restraint required; low level warnings including freezing and submissive grinning; allows ears to be cleaned.

ENERGY LEVEL:

We have no history on Orchid so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment.

Orchid is a young, enthusiastic, social dog.

Orchid will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
