07/22/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/22/17 15:12 Basic Information Ophelia is a black and white, medium sized, female dog. She was found roaming the streets in the Bronx and was brought in by police officers. Ophelia has no physical injuries or illness. Behavior during Intake Ophelia had a calm posture and barked only when she saw the officers leave. She allowed to be collard and photographed and went into the kennel on cue.
07/29/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: How could a neat gal like Ophelia have been found in the street? She is so elegant, pretty and feminine, healthy and beautifully groomed. Prior litters have not altered her great figure. I found Ophelia laying quietly on her bed. She came with hesitation, slowly to her door when I summoned her gently and got leashed easily. Ophelia is a very good walker, probably house trained and does not chase the birds. She enjoys free time in the yard which she explores but comes slowly when called, accepts a bandanna as well as some petting while wagging her tail. For now, she is slow with her movements, cautious and needs some time to sit upon request and post a nice smile on her face. I thought it would never happen but she looked so happy when she did…from that moment, Ophelia was “lighter”, settled next to me, welcomed some visitors and indulged in caresses and even kisses. I look forward to meet Ophelia again and discover more of her secrets. Meanwhile, come and meet her at the Manhattan Care Center. She might be the muse you have been looking for to brighten your life.

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/23/17 During her initial medical examination, Ophelia was timid and a bit tense though allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no known history on Ophelia so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home in environment; Ophelia displays a low energy level in the care center.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Ophelia has been observed to freeze and growl over food in the care centers. Outside during socialization interaction with caretaker, Ophelia took a treat and when handler walked by she froze and growled. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience adult-only home (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13): Ophelia has been observed to stiffen and growl over food in the care center; we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in a home environment though recommend appropriate management. The behvaior department believes an adult-only home is best at this time. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Though observed to be human-social, Ophelia may need time to warm up to the handler as she initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Ophelia to interact at her own pace, force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing her to new/unfamiliar situations _X_Resource guarding: Ophelia has been observed to freeze and growl when approached while eating. We recommend that Ophelia be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in her future home. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Ophelia’s mouth, and any time something is removed she should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. She should be taught the “drop” cue and trade-up games.
