05/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Oh, Ophelia!! This beautiful girl radiates a warmth and positive energy that will make you want to sing her name instead of just speaking it. She is always so happy to go out and about and seems very grateful for attention. When I approach her cage she shakes her entire back end and keeps it going as she greets favorite staff members in the hallway. She can pull some on the leash if she’s got pent up energy or if she spots some furry urban wildlife, but walks nicely once she’s calmed down. She is a fetching machine and it’s a great way for her to burn off some energy. She can be a little jumpy if she can’t take the anticipation of the throw any longer (or other times when she just wants more petting!), but is very treat motivated and easily channeled into a “sit.” Her smile could light up a room, her wiggle could cause a small earthquake, and her company could make your days so much brighter….come meet Ophelia today at Brooklyn ACC!
05/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Ophelia came to us as a stray so we don’t have any behavior information other than what has been observed while in the shelter environment. While on her relief walk Ophelia had very soft body language and only pulled a bit on the leash. She was interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. She allowed the assessor to conduct all of the handling items without displaying any signs of aggression. On the squeeze item Ophelia seemed to become very uncomfortable and pulled her paw back with stiff body language. She maintained her composure during the flank items, and was only a bit tense during these items. She only displayed minimal interest in the toy item on this portion of the assessment. When on an on-leash dog interaction Ophelia approached the helper dog with soft and relaxed body language. We believe that Ophelia can go to a home with an experience owner and no young children due to her behavior during the squeeze and flank items. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, or low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1:3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip long.
05/10/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Ophelia was brought in as a stray so her past behavior with dogs is unknown. When off leash in the Care Center, she approaches soft and slightly wiggly but is muzzled due to her bite history. Once in the pen she greets softly and with a neutral body. After the muzzle is removed, Ophelia engages in brief bouncy play. She is able to continue to play with male dogs, but targets females. Due to this reason and the uncertainty of Ophelia’s bite history, the Behavior Department recommends that any potential adopter presents their dog for a thorough dog-dog interaction. 5/11 update: Ophelia greets with a wiggle body and solicits play, muzzle licking and bouncing. When a male is persistently sexual motivated, she will low growl and offer correction. 5/19: Ophelia is playful, engaging in and soliciting high energy play. She is tolerant of a male continually trying to mount her. 5/24-5/25: Ophelia greeted appropriately and engaged in gentle play. 5/26: Ophelia targets a female while in group play by following her around and placing her chin on the female dog’s back.
