Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited history 6/26/17 Neutered, Stray (With finder for two days) Previously lived with: Adults and another dog Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward dogs: Got along well with the dog he was staying with Resource guarding: None reported SAFER ASSESSMENT: 6/28/17 Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: While attempting to collar Onyx, he snapped at the assessor. For this reason, the handling portion of the assessment was not conducted. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 6/27: An off leash introduction could not be conducted for Onyx due to handling concern when attempting to handle. When greeting off leash, Onyx initially displays a tense body and high tail, though softens after sniffing and offers a brief wag. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Onyx was tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/27/17 During his initial medical exam, Onyx was tense and snapped. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Onyx so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Onyx is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Onyx has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Onyx has allowed only minimal handling at the care center, growling and snapping when handled. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is recommended to assess behavior after decompression in a new home environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Onyx to new and unfamiliar situations.
