Initially when he was approached by his finder he growled and snapped. His finder stated he warmed up after offered food. He described him a friendly and sweet. Behavior during intake: Onion approached with a wagging tail and relaxed body. He allowed me to pet him, collar him and take his pictures. He sat on cue and took treats gently. He walk right into his kennel and layed down, with no coaxing.
08/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Onion I would rather call Prince, is throning majestically on his bed, right in the middle of his two kennels. He is one good looking dog I have a hard time to call “elderly” as he seems such in a good shape, trim, healthy and so well dressed in his impeccable silver coat. Onion is leashed easily and walks at a good pace. He seems pretty much house trained. Dogs are met in the street , uneventfully and birds do not seem to interest him. Back in the yard, Onion sits on command and right away for treats(he sometimes jumps for them too). Although we did not really play, Onion gets excited at the sight of a ball and will run after and catch it. His vision seems slightly impaired(he does have quite cloudy eyes) although he does not bump into things. Onion appears as a quite serious gent(he can smile, though) but he has also a very soft side and will sit by my side or on the bench, indulging in caresses. One wonders what was Onion’s life like, what was his real name….He has been beautifully cared for, has manners and knows his way around us humans. I hope that a home sweet home will materialize for him very soon. He seems like an elegant dog who would make a very loyal best friend. Onion is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center.
07/31/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/28/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/31/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff. Summary: Onion displayed no concerns during the handling portion of his assessment, but he became a bit stiff when in possession of the toy. PLAYGROUP: Onion is polite when greeting female dogs in the care center, though at times has displayed potential to attempt to mount. He has not yet been introduced to a male dog in our care. Slow introductions are recommended between Onion and tolerant, respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Onion had a wagging tail and relaxed body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/29/17 During his initial medical exam, Onion allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Onion so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays a medium level of activity. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the potential for resource guarding, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who can be trusted to leave Onion alone when he is in possession of something can be considered. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Onion became stiff when in possession of a toy on his behavior assessment, showing a protentional for resource guarding. For this reason, we advise against ever removing items from Onion’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. We recommend that Onion be left along while eating, and that food guarding behavior modification steps (available at ASPCApro.org) be utilized if this behavior is problematic in his future home.
