05/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 5/9/17 Unaltered male, stray Previously lived with: Unknown Other notes: Oliver was initially nervous, in the care center with a tense body, and fearful. During his walks In the care center he would need an considerable amount of coaxing just to get through the hallways. Today Oliver is much more relaxed, and comfortable. He has shown great progress. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/16/17 Look:2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is fearful; his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body tense with his mouth closed. Tag:2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is crouching and lip licks. Flank Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Oliver was friendly but continue to be timid in the care center and the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Oliver was initially nervous when interacting with calm male and female dogs. With further playgroup sessions, Oliver has become more social. Oliver was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that that Oliver be placed with resident dogs that match his calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/9/17: Allowed all handling, remained laying on ground, tail tucked, head low unless in room with the other dog. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Oliver so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5)- Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Oliver may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity-Dog has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give dog the option to walk away from any social interaction. Dog should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Dog’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Dog may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her/his new surroundings. _X_Fearful- Though observed to be human-social, Oliver may need time to warm up to the handler as he initially presents as a fearful dog, avoiding contact, shying away from direct touch. We recommend allowing Oliver to interact at his own pace; force-free, rewarding based training is advised when introducing him to new/unfamiliar situations.
