Oliver
Hello, my name is Oliver. My animal id is #14932. I am a male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 29-Nov-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving – no pets allowed.
Oliver is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex which is contagious to other dogs. Oliver will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics and monitoring of weight gain. Oliver should go to an experienced dog home that will allow him to acclimate to his surroundings at his own pace.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: “Please sir, can I have some more”, asks Oliver (Twist). And so we are feeding our way-too-skinny Oliver several small meals daily to help him gain some much-needed weight. He’s shy and nervous, a tiny 4 year old who needs to feel some love and feel safe before giving himself over to a new person. Surrendered by his family, we’re told that he is uncomfortable around strangers, but when with people he knows, he’s playful and active. We’re all strangers, of course, so it took Oliver a few days to acclimate to all of the newness around him. But, like ‘the little engine that could’, Oliver is slowly getting more comfortable with staff and volunteers, and even settled into my lap for some hugs. Still nervous on leash on the street (NYC streets can be daunting), he’s happiest staying close to home base at this point. Oliver enjoyed meeting some staff that came to meet him, his tail wagging shyly. Enjoying group play with his buddies, he’s been polite, tolerant and bouncy, so may enjoy having a canine sibling in his new home. While we only have a glimpse into Oliver’s past, we want to look into his future, filled with love, playtime, nutritious food and more love. Our little peanut is hoping you’re the one; are you?

IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: When Oliver initially arrived at the shelter, he displayed warning behaviors in his kennel towards novel people (growling, distance increasing). However, once outside of his kennel, he displayed more social behavior, seeking attention and accepting treats gently. Oliver now continues to be social with handlers both inside and outside of his kennel.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to Oliver’s owner reporting that he is fearful of and growls at new people, we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Oliver’s previous owner reported that he growls at new people. When he first arrived at the care center, he was displaying this behavior. Over the course of a few days he has warmed up to his caretakers and has become social and friendly with them, but it is likely he will revert to his original behavior in a new home. It is important to listen to Oliver if he is to growls, and to leave him alone if he does. He should be allowed to walk away from any social interaction and should never be forced to submit to handling or petting. Consultation with a positive reinforcement, force-free trainer or behaviorist is recommended if this behavior is problematic in a future home.
