Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Olive to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Olive has displayed no social behavior in shelter and actively avoids interaction. Any attempts to interact or any direct touch results in immediate snapping/growling. We cannot with much confidence predict how this will translate in a new home environment.) _X_Resource guarding (See known history; The behavior department advises against ever removing items within Olive’s possession without offering/trading for an item of same value. Behavior modification appears to be necessary; consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised.)
09/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/22/16 19:54 BASICS: Olive is a eight year old black collie. Her previous owner had her since she was a five month old puppy. They were no longer able to keep her because she had not done well in the presence of a new baby in the home. SOCIALIZATION: Her behavior around strangers is variable and really depends on how she is approached by the person. At times she would walk over and sniff the person. However if the person seemed uncomfortable then she would herself become shy and walk away. She had recently shared her home with a baby and did not seem to be acclimating well to the change. On walks when she saw a dog nearby she would become tense and show her teeth or growl. BEHAVIOR: Olive is great about using the bathroom outside and has never had an accident. She is attentive and obedient and listens to her owners when they say sit, lay down, come and give me your paw. Her owner mentioned that her overall demeanor is quite nervous. She is relaxed at home and in their presence because of the long relationship she has had with them. They are able to read her body language and mediate the situation when she does become uncomfortable. Olive shows guarding behavior with regards to food, treats and bones. She will snarl and growl if someone approaches her while she is eating. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW: Olive is a high energy dog in the sense that she needs stimualtion and active play. She is used to three walks a day. She loves chasing after tennis balls and sticks. She also enjoys squeaky toys and a game of tug. Once in the home she becomes more mellow and will either sit on the couch, bed or lay by the window sill while she looks outside. Her diet had consisted of changed to Blue Buffalo. BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE: Upon entering the office Olive did not want to interact with the counselor at all. She hid under the chair where her owners where seated for the duration of her intake and would only come out from under the chair when coaxed by her owner or with treats. The counselor gave her treats which she took but then immediately backed away from the counselor and sat by her owners. While she was being scanned her tail was tucked, her pupils where dilated and the whites of her eyes were visible. When the counselor approached her slowly to collar her she showed her teeth and snapped her head back.
09/24/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Olive is a gorgeous girl, her luminous coat silky to the touch, her amber eyes shining as bright as two new copper pennies. Sweet, shy, alert and curious, she joined us when the only family she’s ever known had a new baby with whom she “didn’t do well”. We’re told she’s housetrained and enjoys 3 walks a day, is attentive, obedient, knows ‘sit’, ‘lay down’, ‘come’, and ‘give me your paw’, doesn’t like to share her food, treats or bones, likes squeaky toys chasing tennis balls and games of tug. Olive has nice leash manners, ignores squirrels that literally pass right in front of us, takes treats gently, poses for photos like a pro, and wags her tail when I tell her ‘good girl’. For a short while we walked with another volunteer and her dog, Olive ignoring the other dog completely and wagging her tail at others in the park. She lay down at my feet while I took some notes, simply watching the morning activities in the park. Olive means ‘symbol of peace’, which is where the saying ‘extending an olive branch’ comes from. Olive is looking for the peace of a new person or family who understands that she can be shy and nervous and will make sure she feels loved, cherished and secure. There is no greater gift to give.
