05/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I may not know from where the name “Olf” derives but I do know one thing for certain: this Olf is LOVELY. As pretty as a picture (apologies, handsome!), one Olf’s favorite pastimes seems to be posing for the same. After a brisk walk to the park where he pulls slightly towards items of interest, Olf inherently seems to know just what’s in order when I pull my camera from my bag. He props himself up on our bench and proceeds to give me his very best angle. Well, who are we kidding? Every angle is perfection. Once our photoshoot is done it’s time to find out what really makes this supermodel tick. Toys? Hmmm no. Even my squeakiest don’t seem to do much. Treats? Wrong again. My most delectable offerings are met with just a sniff. Pettings? BINGO! I rub Olf’s ears, scratch his back, massage a soft spot right under his chin, and through it all he leans into me with such force, I worry he’ll be forever imprinted on my side. Olf came to us as a stray and though 3 years-old, he seems quite a bit younger. Those clear green eyes are always searching. Searching our pen, the cloud-drizzled sky, and then my face for what’s to come. But give him his pets, and the searching is done. Olf is unsettled in this new world and human touch is his anchor. He needs only the right hand — and the right heart — to settle him for good. Could that be you? Olf is waiting to meet you at Manhattan’s ACC.
05/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Update: 5/25 Since Olf has come to us he has displayed anxious and sometime frustrated behaviors in the shelter environment. He has been observed stress panting, pacing and constantly barking in his kennel. Olf doesn’t seem to be thriving in this environment at this point in time. We recommend Olf be placed in a stable environment as quickly as possible. SAFER: 5/20 Olf came to us as a stray so we don’t have any prior behavior information other than what has been observed in the shelter environment. Olf pulled a bit on the leash during his relief walk but had relaxed body language. When entering the behavior room Olf seemed to have high energy level but was interested in interacting with the assessor. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. He did become a bit mouthy during the tag interaction applying light pressure, but also jumped on the assessor a bit strongly. Olf was a bit difficult to position for the squeeze test and pulled his paw away quickly when the assessor touched them. Due to Olf’s high energy and sometimes anxious behavior we recommend Olf go to a home with an experienced adopter. Look: 2. Dog constantly attempts to jump on assessor strongly with an open mouth and a bit tense body language. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. He indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog constantly jumps on assessor strongly, mouths the leash lightly and is a bit slow to de-escalate. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Dog licks hand. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Olf has had limited interaction off leash with other dogs. He has displayed anxious behavior, but also brief interest in play. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Olf before placement with a resident dog. Olf may benefit if given time to decompress and acclimate with slow introductions in a new environment. He arrived as a stray so in home behavior with dogs is unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Olf briefly bounces around but quickly becomes anxious and begins to pace.
05/18/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR

Olf may benefit if given time to decompress and acclimate with slow introductions in a new environment. He arrived as a stray so in home behavior with dogs is unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Olf briefly bounces around but quickly becomes anxious and begins to pace. 5/19 update: Olf is a bit bouncy and engages in short bursts of play. 5/22, 23 update: Olf engages in bouts of play, however becomes anxious after prolonged time outside. 5/24, 25 update: Olf engages in bouts of play with males and females.
