Date of assessment: 24-May-2018
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Dog follows at the end of the leash, body soft.
Paw squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary: Odin came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and exuberant towards the handlers but can be mouthy with light pressure.
Summary (1): Odin’s previous owner reported that he was playful with and respectful of the other dog he lived with.
5/23: When off leash at the Care Center, Odin initially is nervous, tucked and avoidant of the novel female dog. As his session continues, he begins to loosen up and engages in brief bouncy play bouts.
5/24: Odin was introduced to a soft, neutered male today. He greeted with a tense posture and the longer they sniffed one another, the stiffer he got, and the slower his movements were. Due to the clear discomfort for Odin, the session was ended.
5/29: Odin nervously greets a novel female dog, before exploring the yard. After circling the area he checks in with other dog and immediately becomes sexually motivated. He position himself to mount, ignoring the other dog’s correction and increasingly becomes aroused (head whipping and jumping) when ever handlers attempt to interrupt him. He is eventually separated and the session is ended.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar; TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:
No children: Odin appears to easily aroused, rough with play and becomes overwhelming with young kids are around for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time.
Potential challenges: Basic manners/poor impulse control; Social hyperarousal; Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition
Potential challenges comments:
Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
Social Hyper-arousal: Dog has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating with very high energy level and mouth the leash immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Odin to new and unfamiliar situations.
Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: While he applies only light pressure, Odin was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Odin puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
