07/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I call Ocean our Manhattan Care Center Grand Dame. Ocean, indeed, is a reserved middle-aged lady, dressed up elegantly in a dark chocolate coat and always found resting calmly in her kennel. She gets up slowly from her couch when she sees my leash and accepts the rope without any discussion. Ocean walks beautifully by my side and eliminates in one stop in the street, not in the yard. She does not chase the birds and nears big and small dogs in a civil and proper fashion. As I took Ocean out a few days in a row, I was able to see her progress in the right direction. She was quite aloof at first, looking for exits while free in a pen with me. She did not wants treats. Ocean was found as a stray, though, and we do not know anything about her past. Now, Ocean comes when called, wags her tail, lets me cup her head in my hands, sustains my gaze and accepts very gladly my caresses and treats. She even sometimes dances on her hinds for roastbeef. We have not played ball yet, may be tomorrow. As a fellow volunteer enters our enclosure, she welcomes her, and I can see a smile on her face. We all feel better when we see a dog coming out of his or her shell. The hope is then that this pooch will have a better chance at being adopted and have a new “leash” on life. Ocean is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to be yours.
