Summary:: Tag.3: Dog becomes easily aroused, mouths the leash and slowly de-escalates. Nyla came into the room loose and wiggly, she was friendly and very friendly towards the handlers.
Summary (1):: Nyla is nervous around other dogs, and tenses up when they approach her. She relaxes when introduced to calmer dogs, but mostly keeps to herself. Nyla was brought in as a stray so her behavior around other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Nyla be placed in a home with resident dogs that are respectful and match her calm demeanor. 11/27: When off leash at the Care Center, Nyla is initially nervous and tense with a more energetic, social male dog. She would stiffen her posture when he approached and solicited attention, especially when he was in her face. When a calmer, older male dog was introduced, Nyla became more relaxed, briefly interacted with him then wandered the yard. 11/28: While following the novel male dog, Nyla tenses her posture when the male dog passes her. She continues to track the other dog, after handlers attempt to interrupt her. 11/29-30: Today, Nyla was more relax around the other dog. She mostly kept to herself while investigating the pens.
Date of intake:: 11/26/2017
Summary:: Nyla had a loose and wiggly during intake.
Date of initial:: 11/27/2017
Summary:: Nyla was anxious, continues to jump and is uncomfortable with restraint.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Nyla so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. Nyla is a young, enthusiastic, social dog. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: Due to Nyla’s enthusiasm, and response to some of the SAFER handling items, we feel she may be intimidated by small children.
Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal
Potential challenges comments:: Nyla has displayed low threshold for arousal, (biting,tugging at the rope, slowly deescalating)Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Nyla to new and unfamiliar situations.
