01/22/16 09:38 Nuray A1063448 (whose name means “moonlight”) is a 6yr old female white & red tick Staffordshire Bull Terrier who was found wandering around the finder’s residence a little while before being brought in. The finder temporarily took Nuray to their home to get a leash to bring her into our BXAC location with. They noticed she didn’t seem to like their French Bulldog (Nuray lunged and hard barked at the Frenchie). They fed her some dry Pedigree dog food and that was when she became more at ease with the finder to allow them to place a collar/leash on her. During intake Nuray seemed nervous. She had her tail tucked with a low body posture. Nuray allowed all handling. She allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of, including positioning her during her photo session. Nuray walked alongside us to the kennel area where she hopped into the kennel on her own. Nuray allowed me to place food & water into her kennel as she sat nicely and waited for it to be placed. When it was time for us to get her on our transport van I asked Nuray if she wanted to “go outside” and she began whining, barking & scratching the kennel door to be let out. Once outside she “went”, Nuray seems to perhaps be house broken.
01/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Nuray could be easily picked out of a crowd… she does stand out. Medium size, a low rider with square elbows and knees, an off white dress sprinkled with zillions of freckles and the most gorgeous smoke topazes for eyes. Her kennel staff let me know…. Nuray loves snow. This many times mama indeed enjoys her time in a snow covered pen. She makes a tunnel through it. Nuray is gone… where is she? Here she is, emerging on the other side of the pen, her nose smudged with white flakes. She is bouncy and happy and mostly a snuggly gal with a non stop wagging tail. She is quite lively and very pleasant to spend time with! Nuray is interested in other dogs. She runs to the gate to meet a very large female, may be too big and imposing for her. I could hear a short rumble before she ran back to me as if for safety. Nuray will have her chance at playgroup with her peers and hopefully with the right match, she will have an awesome time. Nuray is one of a kind, a little snow Lynx, lively, friendly and quite affectionate who would love to brighten up your life with her presence and love. Come and meet her at the Manhattan Care Center. Nuray is waiting for her chance to shine. https://youtu.be/ATlv68NJ0dk Another volunteer writes: Stunning in her white coat with tan freckles all over, Nuray is built like a little tank, low to the ground, broad, and with a tail that never stops wagging. Her leash manners are lovely, and while she wasn’t initially sure about that cold wet stuff on the ground, she rallied like a champ and we had a nice walk. Her eyes are a clear amber, gentle and kind as she checks out her new environment. We stopped to snuggle, and Nuray rolls in, snorting with pleasure at the contact. Named by the person who found her, Nuray means Moonlight and it’s such a sweet name for her. When our walk was over she hopped right back into her kennel and onto her bed, stretching and wagging her tail. Our little tank, I mean gem, is waiting to meet her new family… ask for her today.
01/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nuray came into our center after a member of the public found her as a stray. When in the Finder’s home temporarily, it is reported Nuray hard barked and lunged at the resident dog who was significantly smaller (French bulldog). During intake Nuray had tail tucked, low body, but allowed all handling. She went into the kennel easily, sitting nicely and waiting while food and water were placed in kennel. Nuray walked nicely on leash for her relief walk. She was friendly and sociable immediately upon entering the SAFER assessment room, fully comfortable. Nuray held gaze during Look item, tail wagging. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, slight lip lick towards end of item. Nuray followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, tail wagging. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, tail wag. Nuray showed no interest in Toy. Nuray approached the helper dog a bit quickly, tail above spine level, lip lick. When interacting with a smaller dog through a barrier, Nuray had very soft body language and was interested in interacting with the smaller dog. The behavior department believes that Nuray can go to an average home with an adopter that has an average amount of experience. She may require a slow approach/slow introduction if she initially appears nervous upon meeting her new family. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is wagging, body soft, mouth closed, lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, tail wag Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, tail wag. Toy 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog a bit quickly, body not stiff, tail well above spine level, ears forward, lip lick. When greeting a small dog through the gate, she has a loose body, wagging tail and taps her paws on the ground in anticipation of interacting.
01/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Nuray is bouncy and playful, running through the pens soliciting play with male and females. She seems to be selective with who she chooses to engage with–with some dogs she stiffens and growls at the gate, with others she greets well, but when introduced, she is uncomfortable with their play style and offers correction. Her finder reports that when introduced to the resident French Bulldog, Nuray “lunged and hard barked at the Frenchie.” However, in the shelter she has walked up to and near small dogs with no incident. Because of the conflicting behaviors seen, the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Nuray into a home with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Nuray greets, becomes playful and bouncy during interaction. 1/27 update: Nuray engages in running play with males and females. She offers a growl when introduced to and solcited by a playful young male. When greeting a small dog through the gate, she has a loose body, wagging tail and taps her paws on the ground in anticipation of interacting. 1/28 update: Nuray solicits other dogs by bouncing up to them and offering play bows. She is polite and will walk away from dogs who are not interested in engaging with her.
