08/09/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/09/16 18:05 3 yound boys (ages8-15) came in to BXACC and stated that they found Norman A1084838 behind an apartment building in the Bronx. They did not leave any information and stated that their parents did not allow them to keep him. Behavior during intake Norman was very friendly and allowed all handling. He was very hot and stretched out on the floor for belly rubs. He was scanned(-) and collared and he sat nicely for photographs. He was then walked and transferred into a kennel with ease.
08/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So quiet in his kennel, staff agrees with me that Norman is amazingly well behaved and calm for a puppy. He’s the best! His lush coat is threaded with color like the finest needlepoint, his leash manners are lovely and he seems to be housetrained. Sweet and soft are the words I would use to describe our Norman. He’s a connoisseur of all good scents, sniffing everything in our path on the way to the park, and off leash loved playing with a plush toy bringing it to me for a game of tug. He doesn’t guard his toy at all, happy to have a human friend with whom to play. He’s a bit shy at first but gradually decides I’m kiss worthy, so we kiss for a moment before starting to play again. He was also shy in his first group interaction but opened up to engage in soft play. The Urban Dictionary defines Norman as a “sexy man”, and we’ll take a little poetic license to describe our four legged Norman as a ‘sexy puppy’. He’s so cute and charming he wowed our behavior team who feels that Norman will be a good fit in a home with average dog experience. As a puppy he’ll need structure, guidance and lots of love to help him grow into the rock star adult dog he’s destined to be. If you’re ready to share the ride to adulthood with Norman, come meet him today.
08/12/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Norman came into our care center as stray, any past behavior in a home is unknown. Norman walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Norman became fearful while playing tag but unresponsive to the touch. He took the toy away with a soft body language. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-to-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Norman is initially reserved and timid, however begins to open up and engage softly in play when solicited. The behavior team feels that pending slow, gradual introduction, a home with another dog may be considered for Norman pending a pre-adoption interaction. Due to arriving as a stray, it’s not known how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home environment. 8/19 Update: Due to some guarding behavior observed in shelter, growling and snapping over toys, the behavior department recommends Norman be placed with an experienced adopter (no young children), who can provide the appropriate behavior modification he needs to thrive as an adult dog. Force-free, reward based training from a professional behaviorist/trainer is advised to assist with Norman’s acclimation to a new home environment.
08/10/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
8/10: When off leash with other dogs, Norman is initially reserved and timid, however begins to open up and engage softly in play when solicited. The behavior team feels that pending slow, gradual introduction, a home with another dog may be considered for Norman pending a pre-adoption interaction. Due to arriving as a stray, it’s not known how his behavior around dogs will translate into a home environment. 9/1-9/7 update: Norman engages in rough play with males and females. He is mouthy and jumps all over the other dogs during play.
