08/31/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Nora Lynn is a precious jewel, a little princess with the most delicate features we have here at the Manhattan Care Center. She is quite shy, within our walls at least, and seeks comfort on any lap or in any arms she can find. She is, as a result, a state-of-the-art hugger and kisser, a bench girl who would spend hours with her caretaker, resting peacefully, tightly bond to her, in the yard. Stairs throw her off, although she has made progress in managing them. She is timid in playgroups with her peers and can get a bit overwhelmed by pushy mates. There is no doubt in my mind that Nora Lynn is a very lively and playful young dog. She gave me a glimpse of the spunky gal she truly is once she felt comfortable with me. We ran, played tag, threw a tennis ball. Nora Lynn was “all out”…a big smile appeared on her face. She was happy…and I was so out of breath. Nora Lynn seems to have been well cared for, and most likely was loved. We understand then, of course that finding herself in a different environment can take a toll on a young pup. Nora Lynn is an adorable nugget, an oreo cookie who dreams to be again someone’s little girl. Come and meet her very soon at the care center and offer her your home and your heart.

She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Nora Lynn was fearful during her assessment, having a tense, low body and tucked tail. She sought comfort from the assessor and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Nora Lynn has begun to display interest in greeting other calm dogs in the care center. History is unknown due to arriving as a stray. Based on observation made in our care, the behavior department feels Nora Lynn may be most compatible with other calm, respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Nora Lynn was tense but allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Nora Lynn so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to how fearful and anxious Nora Lynn currently appears, we recommend a home without young children. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Nora Lynn is fearful at the care center but appears to seek comfort from handlers. It is important to always go slow and give Nora Lynn the option to walk away from any social interaction. Nora Lynn should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Nora Lynn’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Nora Lynn would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. _X_Anxiety
