Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 01/10/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy or rawhide to you. Summary: Nom Noms displayed no concern during his behavior assessment. PLAYGROUP: Nom Noms was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Nom Noms is sexually motivated and mounts female dogs. With further playgroup sessions, he responds well to handler interruptions and is able to calmly socialize with a female. When greeting a male dog, Nom Noms displays stiff body language. He immediately rushes towards the other male and attempts to mount. When the male runs away from him, Nom Noms begins to low growl. The Behavior Department recommends that Nom Noms be placed in a home with calm female dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/6/17 During his initial examination Nom Noms tolerated all handling. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: While returning from playgroup one afternoon Nom Noms was startled by a staff member standing around a corner. Noms immediately began barking and pulling towards that person. He calmed quickly once the person moved out of sight, but his arousal level remained high; his body was stiff and tense for the remainder of his walk to the kennel.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_Recommend no dog parks (Due to reactivity Nom Noms has displayed towards male dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Nom Noms not be taken to dog parks until his behavior can be further assessed in a more controlled environment. He should be given adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to counter-condition and desensitize Nom Noms to help him associate male dogs with positive experiences, such as toys or treats.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: See in-shelter observations. While his response was likely influenced by the startle and sudden appearance of a person, Nom Noms’s forward motion and strong reaction is a concern. We recommend any potential adopter be comfortable with this behavior and prepared to manage it safely should it occur again in the future.
