A volunteer writes:
Little Nina did not come to us with the expected comments  from her former family. She would be anxious, a little rough in her play style with kids and adults , not always nice with the house cat and would be  only partially house trained. She did sleep on her owners bed, though and is said to be  friendly and affectionate. Households differ from one another and may be, may be, Nina could be a totally different pet under a different leadership…I met Nina as she first arrived at the care center, a precious almost all white damsel shaking like a leaf in her kennel and raising her lips in fear. i sat by her door and talked to her. I showed her the leash, opened her den and Nina came out,  one, two, three …Few laps around the yard, then the street. She pulled  but did her business and showed no interest in other dogs or the birds.  Back in the yard, Nina hopped at once on the bench  and I started my “courting”…We stayed there together over one hour. I could not, I would not let her go… She was so sweet and needy.  A smile(captured in a very bad picture) even appeared on her face. She loved to be talked to and caressed.  She took in the end, few treats, quite gently. She seemed fine when another volunteer entered our enclosure but was uncomfortable(just for a moment) when a large male appeared in the adjacent pen. Of note is that Nina never was socialized with other dogs. As guilt kept pounding on my brain, I finally parted from Nina to attend to some of our many other dogs. A kennel is not her thing and she started shaking and grumbling again but so much less. I left with her my scarf hoping it would remind her of our time together and calm her down. Nina without any doubt needs an experienced foster or adopter who strong with the information at our disposition will work on Nina so never ever again she can be brought to a shelter for not performing as expected from a pooch… Nina is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming to be yours.

PROFILE :

Basic information: Nina is a 6 yr old dog who was a gift from a family member and was kept in the same home for the past 6 years. Unfortunately due to being too strong she could not be kept. She was last brought to the vet about a year ago for vaccinations.
Socialization: Around strangers and children she is described fearful tolerant and anxious and plays somewhat rough with them. She has been socialized with her sibling cat for about a year and was usually tolerant but occasionally became reactive with her as well. She has never been socialized with dogs and  there’s no records of her ever biting another animal however she has bitten another person before.
Behavior: Luna has a thing for biting and chewing on household items and during fireworks and loud storms she becomes nervous and attempts to hide. She enjoys bath time, being brushed & having her nails trimmened and is unbothered when someone attempts to touch her food, toys when shes eating or being pushed off of furniture. She will however bark consistently and growl when she is being restrained or when she is being held and when unfamiliar people approach her home or owner and when someone attempts to touch her bone.
For a New Family to Know: Nina is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, excitable, confident, independent, pushy and somewhat anxious. She has a high activity level, enjoys belly rubs, will follow you around when home with you, likes to play with balls, bones and ropes and loves to play tug. She has been kept mostly indoors, prefers to sleep on her owners bed, ate homemade dog recipes 2x a day, is considered partially house trained & has daily accidents. She is not well behaved when she is left alone at home and destroys household items and goes potty indoors, has never been crate trained, likes a to be walked at least 2-3x a day and pulls very hard on leash.
Intake: Upon intake Nina allowed minimal handling. She allowed counselor to take her picture and place a leash on her however she did not allow collaring. She became anxious once her previous owners were leaving however had a relaxed body and wagging tail when she was being handled.
