02/07/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Now I understand why Niko ended up two summers in a row at the care center. Niko owns very long legs that allow him to leap over fences and obstacles and run as fast as a Cheetah. He is said to be part Boxer and Great Dane. I say he descends from a Greyhound…Niko is gorgeous and cannot take a bad picture…. His eyes sparkle, expressing his joy to be free in a pen, cavorting with his peers, running after a ball or just being in the company of a human. He is all excited and sizzling when he sees a ball or a toy..and he does not guard anything…In playgroups with other dogs, he is playful and bouncy, entices his friends to play but needs some understanding that his demands are not always welcome. Niko enjoys to be caressed and to come on the lap. He is quite an affectionate young man. On the leash, he pulls but nothing I cannot manage. He is very much house trained, does not mark his territory and does not go after the birds. A kennel, you can imagine is not what a long legged boy who has spent time in a yard, will put up with…Niko carries on when he sees a person or another pooch passing by his den…Do not let this fool you, once out in the open, Niko is another dog…energetic, enthusiastic, definitely but a very enjoyable dog to spend time with. Niko was surrendered to us as he was too big and too strong for his owner…When asked what she likes the most about her dog, the owner answered: Niko is sensible and loyal….Niko was left with great comments across the board, loving, playful and eager to play with kids and other dogs while a little overwhelming because of his size and his boisterousness…Bottom line, our gorgeous friend Niko is a great pooch with a wonderful heart but who needs an active owner who will keep him busy and channel his energy in order for him to mingle happily but with more poise with kids and other dogs. Niko has my vote and I hope he will have yours too. Come and meet him at the Manhattan Care Center and make him your forever best friend.

02/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Niko has become increasingly distressed in the kennel environment. When dogs walk past his kennel he begins barking and lunging at his door. He is not thriving in the kennel environment and needs to move into a stable home environment quickly. 2/3 SAFER: Niko came into our center as an owner surrender. He is described as excitable and friendly and is reported to be housetrained. During intake, Niko leaned into the admission counselor’s lap, accepted treats, and allowed all handling. He was tense and nervous during his initial medical exam, resisted being examined. Niko pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He displayed high energy and movement upon entering the SAFER assessment room. Niko pulled out of assessor’s hands on all three Look attempts, shoulder rubbing. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, lip lick, mouth open. Niko playfully engaged in Tag game, jumping and popping his body, but calmed easily at end of game. He shoulder rubbed while positioning for Squeeze item, but once positioned stood still, did not pull paw back on both attempts, head low, lip lick. He showed minimal interest in Toy, reacting to the squeak sound with interest but then losing interest quickly. The Behavior Team feels Niko would do best with an Experienced owner that does not have young children. He will benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his high energy and enthusiasm. We recommend Niko should not be left in the yard unsupervised due to his previously reported history of jumping over fences. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions, shoulder rub. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, mouth open, lip lick. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc, settles easily at end. Squeeze 1/ 2 dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Niko is playful and bouncy, offering bows and paw slaps to solicit play. He may lack social skills as he can be rude and continue to jump into the helper dog once correction has been offered.
02/03/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Niko is exuberant and playful with males and females, jumping on them and offering paw slaps to solicit play. On one occasion he became aroused when playing with a vocal female, but he is otherwise social and appropriate. His owner reports that although he has not lived with any other dogs, Niko is “excited and immediately playful when seeing dogs in passing.” The behavior department feels that Niko could go to a home with another dog that is boistrous and has a similar playstyle. When off leash with other dogs Niko is playful and bouncy, offering bows and paw slaps to solicit play. He may lack social skills as he can be rude and continue to jump into the helper dog once correction has been offered. 2/4 update: Niko solicits and engages in exuberant, pawsy play. 2/6 update: Niko jumps on and over a group of males during play. He does attempt to mount but takes correction; he as well will offer correction when mounted. 2/7 update: Niko engages in running play with a playful female dog. He occasionally attempts to mount when flagged by the female but ceases with handler interruption. 2/9 update: Niko solicits by jumping on and over the other dogs, both males and females. He persistently attempts to mount the male (no correction was offered) occasionally running through the pen with him. 2/10 update: Niko continues to exhibit these behaviors when off leash with other dogs. 2/11 update: Niko is boistrous and bouncy with males and females. He does offer correction to an overly pushy female but will continue playing when she slows down. 2/12 update: Niko, again, engages in rough, bouncy, running play with males and females. 2/13 update: Niko continues to engage in rough play, but he becomes aroused when interacting with a vocal dog–he tenses and becomes vocal back to her.
