04/19/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full profile Date of intake 4/12/2017 Neutered male, owner surrender Previously lived with: 8 month old child and 6 year old child Behavior toward strangers: Timid, tense Behavior toward children: Respectful and relaxed with resident children Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Niko is described as mellow, shy, aloof, and fearful with a medium activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Date of assessment 4/19/2017 Toy: 1. Minimal interest, briefly appeared interested in squeak sound, does not fully engage. This may be due to environment as owner reports Niko likes all kinds of toys, especially squeak toys. Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip long or neutral. Summary: Niko is difficult to remove form the kennel, lunging and snapping. He has allowed minimal handling from staff. Out of concern for his stress levels we feel Niko is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. Please see his owner surrender profile for a full summary of his behavior in his previous home. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: Date of initial 4/12/2017 During his initial medical exam, Niko was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: His owner describes Niko as having a medium activity level which matches what we have seen in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner – Niko has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity – Niko allowed petting from staff but suddenly and rapidly escalated when pet under his chin, lunging and snapping. While Niko showed no issues with children in his previous home, he has shown a number of warning and distance-increasing behaviors to different handling triggers. Due to these behaviors we recommend an experienced adopter and an adult-only home. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression – Niko has attempted to bite during his stay in our care centers when uncomfortable; It is important to move slowly with Niko, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise)and to allow Niko to initiate interactions. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing or exposing Niko to new and unfamiliar situations. He should never be forced to submit to petting or handling he does not initiate. _X_Kennel presence – While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotioinally charged or stressful environments Niko may show behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in his kennel. It is important
