06/21/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Dressed in the most gorgeous Mahogany color coat, Nike has clearly been a cherished companion. She’s been well fed, her coat gleams, and as of this writing, seems a bit concerned as to where everything familiar to her is. Happy to come out for a walk, she’s likely housetrained, pulls very slightly on leash, and looked up at every person we passed on our walk…perhaps making sure this wasn’t her person? Nike seems to have been a city girl, as the noise of the early morning traffic didn’t bother her, nor did some drilling and hammering going on in the yard. She actually watched with interest as workers were dismantling a pen. As Nike and I established our friendship, she started nudging my hand to pet her, eventually rolling over for a belly rub, eyes closing, deep breathing and savoring the time. Nike comes when I call her, tail wagging, eyes bright and friendly. After our time together, each time she saw me again in the shelter, her tail wagged in friendship–“Hey Volunteer, I remember you!” It may take a few minutes for Nike to decide you’re worthy of her friendship, but I wouldn’t trade those few minutes for the world. Once you get the Nike stamp of approval, she’ll love you to the moon and back. Come meet her today. Just Do It. A volunteer updates: If there is any question about what a rockstar Nike is, take a look at her walking log, and all doubt will be dispelled. She’s a favorite of volunteers for her easy manners on leash, friendly good nature and cute little quirks (like touching your hand with her nose as she walks). And when you stop walking, she may roll over for a belly rub, again nosing your hand and waving her legs in the air. Nike ignores other dogs as we walk, but seems uncomfortable in group play, so may do best as your one and only. Her amazing personality, friendly good nature and overall sweetness all wrapped up in one stunning beauty is the girl I’d choose to have by my side. Come meet her and you’ll be swept away–guaranteed
06/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Nike walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Nike was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She followed the assessor at the end of the leash with a calm and relaxed body language when playing tag. Nike was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment. Nike is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when (name) is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy 1. No interest. 6/21 update: Nike does not appear to be thriving in the busy shelter environment. She has begun to growl when approached. When visited today by two separate people, she growled while resting on her bed. When one person returned, she stood, rushed to the front of the kennel with a tense body, growled, and bared teeth. We feel that it is in her best interest to move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible in order to decrease stress and in order to prevent continued rehearsal of these behaviors.
06/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Nike is nervous and avoidant of interaction. She arrived as a stray, so in home behavor is unknown. However, due to discomfort around dogs in the care center, the behavior department feels that Nike should be allowed time to decompress in a new home before following up with other dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Nike is nervous and avoids approach. 6/17 update: Nike continues to avoid approach, and offers a low, defensive growl when greeted. 6/19 update: Nike continues to avoid interaction. 6/21: Nike greets and sniffs a calm male dog, then roams the pen.
