08/31/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: This guy really may be as big as the “Night” sky! He’s humungous, at nearly 105 pounds! But Night is just a big baby at heart. He loves snacks and will sit eagerly for them. Night enjoys a good squeaky toy too, and when I gave him one he gingerly placed it in my lap to engage me with it. He’s into sleeping on comfy blankets instead of his bed and will cuddle with his toys. In his former home, he was tolerant of a small child that he was exposed to, and appeared to want to play with the dogs he came across in the park. He enjoys bathing and grooming. His owner described him as “loving, affectionate, and playful” and said he was always there to greet him. I can’t imagine what else you’d need for a loving, loyal pet! Ask to meet Night today!
08/23/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Night lived with his previous owner for 9 years. He is reported to be friendly with strangers and playful with dogs in the park. He was tolerant of a 2-year-old child he was exposed to. He is described as loving, affectionate, and playful, with a medium activity level. His previous owner does note that Night will growl if anyone besides his owner touches or approaches his food bowl while he is eating, though he has never escalated to a snap or a bite. Night was social and easy to handle at intake. He was a bit tense during his initial medical examination, but he tolerated handling. During SAFER, Night came into the assessment room loose and wiggly; he was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Night was relaxed and playful towards the leash during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Night was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner, the behavior department feels he would be best suited for an experience adopter in an adult only home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash at the Care Center, Night greets with a tense body but relaxes after a few seconds of greeting the helper dog. He becomes slightly sexually motivated but responds well to interruptions by the handlers. Otherwise he wanders the yard exploring.
08/22/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Night’s previous owner reported that he has never lived with other dogs but appears to want to play to with them when he sees them. When off leash at the Care Center, Night displays soft body language in a group of calm neutered male and female dogs. He becomes slightly sexually motivated but responds well to interruptions by the handlers. He displays slight assertive posturing, placing his chin over another intact male dog, but is able to listen to handler interruptions. The Behavior Department recommends that Night be placed in a home with a dog that matches his calm energy level and a through dog-dog interaction be conducted pre-adoption to ensure compatibility. 8/22: Night greets with a tense body but relaxes after a few seconds of greeting the helper dog. He becomes slightly sexually motivated but responds well to interruptions by the handlers. Otherwise he wanders the yard exploring. 8/27: Night displays soft body language when meeting a male through the gate. The other male was uncomfortable with Night’s large size and they were not introduced. When Night is greeting a playful male, he closes his mouth and displays look aways. Due to Night’s discomfort with the playful male’s energy level, they are not introduced. 8/31: Night is social and displays soft body language as he interacts with calm male and female dogs. He displays slight assertive posturing, placing his chin over another male dog, but is able to listen to handler interruptions.
